I have a Magnavox 745 5-CD changer. It skips.

The Radio Shack lens cleaner (a CD with tiny brushes) helped a little. But: still skipping.

Is there a guru I can send this machine to?

try cleaning the rails along which the cd lens moves ....

if its an old machine the grease used may have oxidiesd and cause the stick and go effect

if it continues it could be warning of imminent laser death ...replacement is relatively simple and cheap assuming the laser mech is one of the more common ones

What would I use to clean the rails? And,, posted on October 28, 2009 at 04:06:09

...is there a "new grease" I can apply?

Thanks,

I used 91% alcohol to clean the rails & machine oil to lube., posted on October 28, 2009 at 06:19:26

A few years ago my old Sony ES player began skipping. I used a Q-Tip & 91% alcohol to gently clean the rails & then lubed the rails sparingly with a couple of drops of sewing machine oil. There may or may not be better solutions than alcohol & machine oil, but I can tell you it fixed the problem, & it's been trouble-free since then.

Just use the oil sparingly. You don't want it dripping down into the player.

Cheers & good luck,
Bobbo :-)

Don't have sewing machine oil. WD40? Turntable bearing oil?, posted on October 28, 2009 at 07:09:37

I got a new subplatter for my Rega turntable, it came with a small vial of oil . . .

Or there's WD 40 . . .

?

You should be able to get it at any discount store. (Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc.) I'd stick with that.

Cheers,

It's a penetrating, kerosene based lubricant.

It may attack the plastic bearings of your transport.

The Rega oil is probably a better choice... Use it VERY sparingly.

I would not use wd40. it is more of a cleaner, posted on October 28, 2009 at 07:58:17
