By popular demand, I've also included a shot of one of the Zigmahornets I built last winter along with a subwoofer from Parts Express with a new cabinet and grill. I even have one of the infamous original PS1 game units I got on eBay for $20 to use as a CD player.

The drivers for the hornets come from Two Bald Guys Audio. At $65 per matched pair, it was a deal I couldn't refuse. I used 1/2" mdf with 1/4" cherry as a veneer. They have a great soundstage and at 94 spl, they work well with the Sex. I probably have less than $200 in the pair. I originally used the Sexy speaker recommended by Doc B., however, these sound better for my taste.

One other thing I would recommend is purchasing an HD FM receiver. There is a definite increase in sound quality with no background noise and the extra side channels are great. Check the HD Radio website in your area for the channels available. The Sony unit from Amazon is less than $100 with remote. It ain't tubes, but you can't have everything I guess.

 did similar for my son. cherry with marble base, vintage fostex (103 i think) and trend audio t-amp. sounded so good i want to keep them. but i didn't.

 Joel,

You obviously have mad woodworking skills. I expect you made your equipment stand as well as the sub and Bottlehead bases.

I had sent you an email through the board asking where in TN you are. I'm in Knoxville. There is a large cadre of tube heads here.

 I replied to your earlier email. I don't why you didn't receive.
I split my time between Nashville and Sewanee (look it up)and am only a short car/motorcycle ride away from you. I would very much enjoy meeting up with a fellow bottlehead to discuss tube stuff. Even though I'm in Music City I don't have a lot of contacts here.

 Those "Ziggies" look great! I've toyed around with building a pair myself, if I can find somebody to let me use their woodworking tools.

How do they sound in terms of bass extension, considering the 4" driver and limited excursion? Do the Merrill drivers have the stereotypical "peakiness," rising response, or midrange glare of Fostex drivers that size (i.e., FE103)?

 I have the Merrill drivers too in Zigmahornet cabs, and I find no 'shout' in the mids, but they definitely benefit from a sub which has the benefit of allowing them to play louder, as the bass frequencies take most of the power and sub(s) relieve the Merrills from their excursion limitations. I use a Marchand Xover @ 24Db/octave @ 80Hz.

 Don't bother if you're not going to have a sub. They don't do "loud" either.

Within those limitations, they're superb.



Bass is supposed to sound big. 6.5" is not a woofer size.

 Joel awesome, awesome Zigmahornets. Wow, I can only imagine how they sound. Just beautiful. You have a great setup. Well done sir.

BTW what kind of music do you listen to and sorry if I missed the answer to my question in your posts.
