Dear all,

I'd love to get feedback on an idea for an AN-E cabinet. For full disclosure, I am considering a Kit 04, and have been toying with this idea for the past few days.

My thinking was this: to mimic the higher end AN-E models, it would be great to have an outboard crossover. But I also hate the idea of adding a box, and also figured the space for the speaker stand is otherwise wasted. So how about combining the stand and crossover?

You could construct a sturdy base in a number of ways. One example could be a double-walled cabinet - use MDF, plywood or whatever you wish - and fill the space between walls with sand and/or lead shot. There would still be decent room for an internal box which could house the crossover. This base could be veneered the same as the speaker, and therefore look almost like a floorstander aside from the 'seam' between the base and speaker.

For wiring, you could have rear speaker terminals in the base, and then short connector wires that would exit the top of the base and interface with a hidden set of terminals in the bottom of the speaker. Therefore you could get rid of the typical rear speaker terminals, and have only one external set visible which would be in the base housing.

Any thoughts?

Robert

Hi Robert,
The new AN=E's external X-overs comes as speaker/stands. They are made of aluminum and have heavy weights on the bottom.

Thanks for the reply. Obviously my idea isn't so novel after all! I had no idea - I assume the boxes are rigid aluminum, and don't have a timber finish to match the speakers? And do the speakers retain their rear binding posts?

Yes, the new boxes have the same binding posts set up as the old. Yes, its all aluminum sheet metal painted black. The box has a wider base than the top, sort of pyramid shape, yet the back side is straight. Approximate height is 25cm, front/back base 43.3cm and sides 34cm. The top rectangle is the same measurement as the speaker. I would rather prefer the boxes made from hardwood than sheetmetal.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. If you can supply a photo I'd love to see it. So I assume there are input and output terminals on the rear of the box?

Yes, that does look bad. Then again, it's a terrible photograph. Here's a higher quality image.

Contender for "ugly speaker of the year" award? Please tell me that any other way it doesn't sound as good. Trying to be positive here.

Too bad they can't find a way to match the stand with the cabinet - kind of a "floorstander" version. Or keep it a as stand but have the matching wood veneer covering the stand - it would make it look a lot better I should think.

Well, maybe, but then they'd have to stock 2 dozen versions of the bloody stand and some of those veneers vary quite a bit in color and pattern over time, leading to a "close but no cigar" match.
