I just picked up a Carver m1.5t at a garage sale for $80.00. It came with some older KimberKable interconnects. I don't know much about vintage gear, but the amp looks beautiful. No cosmetic issues. I was able to plug it in and verify that at least 3 of the leds worked.

Question is, on the surface (I haven't heard it yet), is this a good deal.

Any opinions on this amp?

TIA

The Carver M 1.5T was one of their "Magnetic Field" amps. They are pretty lightweight and have big power. Their reliability was not too great, but if yours is working well you made a pretty good score...

Another question: The Carver 4000t preamp is also available, and looks to be in great condition. What would be a reasonable price for that?

Is this a better question for the Vintage site?

I traded a Hafler DH-101 for a new 4000t back in the day. I had it for about a two days. My friend and I both hated it. Fortunately I was able return it and get the Hafler back. The dealer was very good about it. I got a Nakamichi CA-5 instead about a month later and kept it(well still have it in the closet. Awesome phono section for the price) for over 15 years. I would look at a different budget pre. The Carver amp on the other hand has a pretty good reputation.

Ifthe other amp is the 'cube' forget it. that one had a lot of overheating issues. nt, posted on July 19, 2013 at 09:38:25

Cube was built like a Chinese puzzle box inside. Really tightly packed.

I NEVER had mine overheat in 20+years from new to sold. I also kept it OUT as much as possible and when in a cabinet, by itself with as much space above/below as possible. At one point, I built a FAN for it. I used a small AC boxer fan and built a shroud fitting the BACK of the amp. So when I was playing at the highest levels, the fan was pulling air thru the amp, keeping it cool. The speakers in question were Magnepan MG-1s and would use the entire amps output......

You really can't say if you got a good amp until you try to use it. Otherwise it is just industrial art, albeit with lights functioning.
My take is you should get responses from both forums.
