I have a system consisting of INT AMP + CD player. When playing music, the sound from 1 speaker sometimes disappears. At other times, a scratching noise is generated followed by silence. At first, I thought this was due to defective CDs but that turned out not to be case. When I adjust the volume control on the amp, the problem goes away (i.e. when I turn the volume way up and then turn it back down). I also suspected this was a problem with the CD player but had that examined and it was fine. I now suspect the Amp is the problem, especially as turning the volume knob makes the problem go away. Any view on whether the amp is the problem here?

What kind of amplifier are you using? It sounds like the volume control could have issues with dirty contacts and I would start with a good cleaning with some Deoxit. This would need to be sprayed into the control from the inside of the amplifier (not just down the shaft from the outside). If you are not familiar with this product or how to best use the contact cleaner there are U tube videos you can look at. Once you spray the Deoxit into the volume control you rotate it back and forth a number of times to help the cleaning process and this may eliminate your issue.

If it has one, clean it (or replace it).

I have seen this problem with NAD, even with new amplifiers.

Good advice that is what I would do too dirt can be very nasty to any audio system. Cleaning cant hurt it as long as it is done right.
