Any serious recommendations on a 2 box (separate power supply) TUBE preamp in the 3K-5K range? All single ended preferred as well.

Check out Tom Tutay at Transition Audio Design. 24 Elm Avenue SE Fort Walton Beach, Florida 32548-5622. Phone-850-244-3041. Tutay does the Altec 1570 Modification and makes custom electronics for any audiophile need.(check Arthur Salvatore's web page) I'm guessing that a line stage would go for around $3K. My custom M/C phono stage was $2800. Tom likes to use 12SN7 and 12J5 tubes. Good examples of these types are quite cheap in comparrison to 6SN7s. His phono stage simply trounced my c-j Premier 15. Tom also does repairs for Air Tight. He will assess your needs and build to suit. He welcomes the use of boutique audio parts such as Mundorf, V-Cap, and AmpOhm. Great guy to do business with. I have his modded Altec 1570Bs in my system as well.

Aesthetix Janus (has phono built in) but wonder if the Callisto might be the ticket for you.

Great preamp but you'll have to look for it in Audiogon.com.

Leben CS-28cx.

Supposed to have an incredible synergy with Harbeth speakers per their audio forum and Jeff Day. It's gorgeous to look at as well.

Great suggestion. Do you know if there is drop in performance going single ended only? None of my gear is balanced.

I really don't know first hand - I run all balanced in my setup. Commentary from other SLP-05 users suggests that single ended is equally excellent.

Acoustic Plan Sarod without phono comes in around 5k euro.

Used Silvaweld SWC100R comes in about 3200 euro...if you can find one.

Look at the Allnic products as they are by the same designer as Silvaweld and his products are VERY VERY good.

Finally, its not a two box but it is tube with a very good phonostage. The VacuumState SVP2 preamp. Allen Wright is one of the best tube preamp designers on the planet and this is an excellent example of his work.

...the SVP-2 is unbalanced, but single box.

I do not beleive it would sound better with two boxes, but the either the cost would have to go WAY up, or the parts and circuit quality go way down to keep the price.

Thanks for the insight Allen. You are right, it may not sound better.

But I have had a few experience with outboard power supplies, and where low level signals are present..preamp, cd player, DAC, I have found them to make a dramatic difference. But not so much on amps.

...you might have a point. But if a designer can't get a line level preamp quiet in a "one box" then he's still got work to do. Our SVP-2 has a very useful MC phono section in the one box...

Yes, I am actually rolling with an SP-16L in my second system. Flawless for the money.

Thanks for recos. Hmm. I must admit I have never heard of Acoustic Plan, Allnic, or Silvaweld. Might be a bit estoteric for me.

Vacuum State products are wonderful.

Thanks again.
