I am looking to purchase a used tube preamp with a phono stage to mate nicely with my conrad johnson mv-52. I am only looking for something under $1,000, preferably way under. Kindly responders here have suggested cj pv- 5 and pv 11 (why not 12?) as offering a promise of synergy - if I chose to go with a conrad johnson amp.

But what of other pre-amps of solid build and great dependability/rep? I am open to suggestion, especially by folks who have made a well trodden path through tube driven things and are familiar with conrad johnson/ my power amp in particular.

Thanks for all replies in advance.

Check out article just published on Audio-Research SP-9. These can be had for under $1K. http://www.tonepublications.com/MAGPDF/TA_024.pdf

I've owned your amp, and most of the preamps you've listed. Any of 'em are fine. You want another make, be on the look out for a used Quicksilver full function preamp. NOT the later linestage, which is OK.
But the old QS full function is IMO a really stand out tube preamp; the churning of tube preamps stopped once that one landed in my system, where it has ruled ever since.

i'm biased (although not a valve!) toward my luxman cl35III, posted on October 24, 2009 at 10:32:41
