Anyone know if a phono stage, in this case a CIA VPP-1, can be input directly to the pass-through of an Integra 9.8 or 9.9? If so, my Proceed PAV/PDSD might become redundant.

There will either be sufficient system Gain or not & this is easily Heard via a Self Trial. Neither unit will Blow Up.

Ah, the trial is the point. I don't have an Integra 9.8 or 9.9 processor to experiment with. I was hoping for generalizations, the output of phono stages are commonly adequate or commonly not adequate to drive an amp without a preamp. As I understand it, in the pass-through mode, the Integra processing is out of the loop; I assume that includes amplification.

Except for phono, all other audio would be via HDMI, thus the question about phono stage.

But how do you control the volume? ..., posted on October 22, 2009 at 16:36:26

The output from the phono stage should be at line level, like any other source but phono stages don't normally have a volume control.

I think Creek made one and also EAR. There is probably more. If you were planning on playing LP's Only, then there wouldn't be any need for a preamp.
