Avoid carbon film resistors at all cost. The AB Carbon Comp resistors are very nice but much too large for this use. Follow Ron's very detailed descriptions in his catalog and you will not go wrong. Unless you are positive about what you are doing, making modifications to anything Ron and company have developed is a big waste of money. Ladder attenuators do not make good balance controls because the steps can be too course. Any value between 20k and 150k will work, 100k is a nice middle ground. You measure the impedance between input and ground.
