In Reply to: RE: What is with these clowns and martyrdom? posted by Wendell Narrod on June 20, 2009 at 14:18:15
willingness to die for their cause hardly (at least in my book) qualifies them as 'clowns'.
'Martyrdom' is generally attached to political figures and less self described.
Where as a society would we be without such individuals?

All the suicide bombers consider themselves martyrs.

I guess it depends on which side of the fence you're sitting on.Many Southerner's here in the U.S. back in the 60's undoubtedly considered MLK a 'clown' when he was shown on the nightly news getting showered with that good ole' Southern spit and bricks.
Same with that Monk over in Viet Nam that set himself on fire..
I'm sure there are still folks left who consider them clowns as well.

I'm not sure you do but that's ok. Dr. King practiced non-violent resistance. The monk took his own life and not those of the innocent.
I don't see any comparison with the suicide bombers.

martyr (Greek "witness"} witness to the truth sometimes ending in death as they will not recant their belief. The press skews the translation for the Arabic belief of a long known truth {not to a largely ignorant Western World} That War is terrorism of the rich.............whilst terrorism is war of the poor. This excuses neither faction of wrongdoing. Definition per Webster of Martyr 1: a person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion2: a person who sacrifices something of great value and especially life itself for the sake of principle

why you think they're 'clowns' then so we'll all know (since I do not).I'm guessing if you oppose the choice(s) of tactics (no matter how unusual or 'extreme') of the individual's involved; they're clowns.
I'm pretty sure no one would care if an Islamic priest set himself on fire on the streets of Baghdad or walked the streets of Manhattan in a non-violent manner.
And yet doesn't the fact that we (and many others for years to come) are discussing suicide bombers more or less legitimizes their efforts?
I'm sure those in the extreme Islamic commnunity consider Timothy McVeigh a 'coward' since he ran after lighting his fuse. Had he chose to die on that faithful day in OK, that would make him a martyr (at least in his own select sect).
"MY" whole point (hence the comparisions to MLK and the Monk) is I've never heard of, or read of a suicide bomber being refered to as a 'clown' although I'm sure there are still people left in the World who view (all of the above) them as such.Rgd's- GL
