country can withstand anything. Clark, before you attack I voted for the current President in 2004. I felt we were at a critical juncture and he would become a great leader or just another political hack. I
continue to be surprised by his level of incompetence. Let the flames begin.
You and me both, along with tens of millions of others, minimum.
What is particularly horrifying about this though, is that with the distance of historical perspective he will look even worse. We'll look back and ponder how this era was ever allowed to happen, and wonder how we survived it.
Future generations worldwide will be left the responsibility to clean up the mess this incompetent, irresponsible and poisonous band of arrogant thieves has left behind.
THAT will be the legacy of W.

Sorry, mate, I just couldn't stop myself.
Kind of takes the winds out of my sails when I get riled up and then respond to the wrong post! Damn you dave c! :-)
.
Baba-Booey to you all!
When I saw the post equating voting for Bush to voting for Hitler I lost my way! I hate G.W.B. too, but that is beyond stupid. I hope you agree, but of course you're free not to.
... but perhaps you just saw pathetic!
Just keep thinking and posting.
But the comparison is idiotic. With all due respect, of course.

(in Texas of all places!), reversing environmental laws that have resulted in tremendous pollution, and allowing Texas to become the leading executioner of innocent people on Death Row, where did you think the leadership would come in?
Before anyone accusses me of being a tree-hugger who's soft on crime I'm in favor of capital punishment in clear-cut cases and I believe in a balance of industry/environment. The reasons big oil companies cried over the tougher pollution controls was money, but they've all enjoyed unprecedented profits over the past 5 years. Of course that's easy when the adminsitration also benefits.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Guess you don't know the story. His predecessor, a Democrat IIRC, had taken such measures as to assure that GW had no further option -- either pardon or commutation -- on the vast majority of the condemned. So he follows the rule of law, and takes lumps from his unknowledgeable opponents.
And by the way, the courts found them all guilty, just for the record; also for the record, Texas is largely run by Democrats.
"But they've all enjoyed unprecedented profits over the past 5 years." LOL again. Quelle horreur! Unprecedented profits! Can't have *that*!! Never mind that George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Randy Moss, Warren Buffett etc. etc. are enjoying unprecedented profits too, it's just that oil companies shouldn't.
Etc. etc.

Clark,
Texas is not largely run by Dems. It is run by Repubs.
As a native Texan and current resident I am painfully aware of this unfortunate state of events.
It is true that Dallas went Dem in the last election. All the Repub judges were ousted and the Dem judges are rectifying the many miscarriages of justice perpetrated by the "pubs"
Demographics trends indicate Texas will be solidly Democratic within 10 years (fortunately).
However , Bush's utter incompetence will likely hasten this trend.
For the last couple of years, maybe, but historically, no. Two words: Lyndon Johnson.
In 1994, Democratic Governor Ann Richards lost her bid for re-election against Republican George W. Bush. It was she whose administration vetted the executions of most of those who were indeed executed under Bush's watch, which was the original topic in this thread; naturally it soon became Blame Bush.
Only in 2002 did Texas Republicans gain control of the Texas House of Representatives, and for the first time since Reconstruction. Since then, indeed, the 'Pubs have been in control, but from all I read it is a tenuous grasp.
Here in Massachusetts the legislature is 82% Democratic and our Congressional delegation 100%, so color me sensitive.
clark
That hasn't stopped him at the federal level.Remember "I'm the decider"? To say he had no options is not realistic. I may not be well-versed in Texas Law procedures but ole G-Dubs was NEVER a man without options.
I wouldn't have a problem with the oil companies excessive profits if in any way the end customers (American public) had a choice in the purchases. There's no alternative than to pay at the pump. When they claim that new machinery to reduce pollution and therefore prevent long-term illnesses (reducing health care costs)would be cost prohibitive yet raking in enormous profits there's a real problem. Of course they deserve a profit, but there has to be some responsibility involved.
If I don't want to support the latest Hollywood star I'll avoid the movie, plain and simple. I can't avoid buying gas.
Baba-Booey to you all!
There's no alternative than to pay at the pump.
The next vehicle I get is going to be diesel, so I can avoid doing exactly that - paying at the pump. Would much rather convert biodiesel from waste veggie oil and biofuel cooperatives...
Great idea, let's hope US auto manufacturers will get behind it.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Right now, there's too much invested in the status quo, if any big auto manufacturers are going to get into biofuels it's going to come from outside the US. Certainly won't come from Detroit, it's going to have to be a revolution from the bottom-up...
d
That's not what I wrote, nor what I was implying :)
If any change on the corporate level is going to happen, I just see foreign-based manufacturers being more nimble and quicker to adapt than US-based ones.
Read my post below.
Why wait for biofuels to be green? We could start by buying smaller cars and and driving less.
And yes, maybe when the American public stops acting like pigs in the choice of cars we buy, the auto manufactures will build something efficient because there will actually be a market for it.
But apparently that will never happen until we are all "bled at the pumps" like in . . . every other country in the world.
I do drive less - when I'm up at school, I'm lucky enough to be on the bus route to campus, during the week my van stays parked. Saves me gas, the aggravation of dealing with commuter parking lots, parking/speeding tickets, etc, etc. All in all a very good deal. But when I'm at my folks' in NC I have no public transportation option :(
The only thing I'm waiting for is enough cash to buy something with a diesel so I can try it ;) We have to grab the future by the balls, it's not going to come magically by itself...
...what you say about it then.
"Excessive profits"? Who determines that? Is there a yardstick in law? Or in statistics even? And what's the scale? Good profits... large profits... exceptional profits... enormous profits... excessive profits... ungodly profits...
Again, who determines that?
Answer: Liberals!
Liberals are our sisters who always seem to know better than us.
"There's no alternative than to pay at the pump." LOL! Or to pay at the box office, or at the store, or... or...
Ever try buying gasoline online? "No alternative than to pay at the pump" indeed. Buncha nonsense.
clark
Of course I remember W's lament when asked about the many Texas executions carried out. "Well, I wanted to commute some sentences, but my hands were tied by the previous administration. I know some of 'em had incompetent public defenders and sketchy evidence, but what could I do?"
I'd love to hear how you avoid paying more than double for gas now than just 3 years ago. Please tell us... Then we would ALL be OK with how much Exxon/Mobil is putting in thier pockets. Reckless profits might be more applicable here because dumping tons of toxins into the air rather than spending a few bucks is exactly that.
Baba-Booey to you all!

Baba-Booey to you all!
...a bad thing.
Or anyway a shameful thing.
And I can certainly see his point.
He doesn't want us to know, he really wants to be our nanny.

..stigma attached by that fat drug addict Limbaugh and the mindless sheep who listen to him. We liberals see nothing wrong with the word "conservative", maybe because there are comparitively few talking heads to bash the meaning into an insulting label.
Baba-Booey to you all!
No, you only use it disparagingly in phraseology like "ultra conservative", "right-wing conservative", "Christian conservative" and best or worst of all, "ultra-right-wing conservative".
One rarely finds liberals uttering the word without those modifiers.
Speaking of "that fat drug addict Limbaugh", I wonder if you ever spoke of Kitty Dukakis (the presidential contender's possible-first-lady wife) as "that skinny drug addict"? Guessing not.
clark
Sure you have a choice. You CAN buy less gas . . .
My brother and I just got back to Boston from the Fall River area and the entire time we were surrounded by f#cking SUVs with a single person in them, towering over my compact sedan. I have zero sympathy for the American public driving their gas guzzlers and crying about being bled at the pumps by the oil companies. Maybe we'll all wake up in a few years and drive more responsible cars like in . . . let's see . . . every other country in the world that I'm aware of where gas wasn't practically free over the past few decades. And maybe the no-longer so big 3, or is it now 2, will wake up and try to compete with the rest of the world in making good efficient cars instead of relying on SUVs and trucks, which not surprisingly isn't serving the real well right now. If it's not too late, that is.
Perhaps the oil company profits are excessive, but it's hard to regulate corporate profits on any business without some pretty sick ripple effects. The market could react by buying efficient cars. Maybe our governments will also decide to focus on public transporation more too, so the public sector can play a role.
We're in a mess because of our short sightedness.
Now, please don't tell me you drive a Prius, and only on the weekends, or I'll be very embarassed! :-)
Oh, and Flah, Flah, Flooooey to you too! :-)
....We have the same dim-witted folk here who whinge about the price of fuel. It is beyond my comprehension why a person driving a 30 – 40 – 50 – 60 K vehicle whinges about fuel prices. Also, those with nothing tend to whinge about everything anyway so it is not surprising they whinge about fuel prices.
I don’t take much notice of fuel prices because it is pointless unless I wish to do something about it. I don’t, I like my conveniences too much. If the day comes I can’t afford my current vehicles I will buy a small little buzz box. Till then I think fuel prices are very low on my priorities of things to worry about.

I get about 25mpg on the highway. Not great, but beats the hell outta the SUVs. My next car will almost certainly be a hybrid.
Baba-Booey to you all!
My next car is the Jetta TDI that is getting between 50-60 mpg on the highway. It is a blue motion diesel that is all state legal and is greener than the prius but drives like a sportscar.
Who says you can't have it (almost) all ?
My car is in the same ballpark as yours.
A hybrid would be great, but I think my next car will just have a little four cylinder because I'm not sure where the batteries or fuel cells that power the hybrids go when they're dead or how long they last.
