I heard from the Sumiko distributor who said they know nothing about the 201. As a reminder, the Shelter distributor said the cartridges are not the same. I've asked the Sumiko manufacturer the same question. No response yet.

Is this an ongoing controversy? Chances are that they are the same, but with different cantilever/diamonds. You know that Sumiko does not manufacture anything, but rebrands items they have "contract built"for them.
I'm on my second Pearl, and the second one needed to go back to the dealer for a better aligned Stylus. The first one was installed by the "Legend" and was probably a hand selected unit.
Both the Pearls needed an azimuth adjustment to offset poorly aligned cantilevers/stylus assemblies. Why all the fuss over a $95 cart?
No controversy, Ted. I was looking for a cheap cartridge. The $250 Shelter 201 was recommended. I then was told it was the same as the $95 Sumiko Pearl. If the 201 is better, it is worth the extra cost, to me. If not, I may as well go with the $95 option.

The 201 is more refined, but not as lively. The Jico SAS-MM1 is completely superior to both of them put together!

!!
By a country mile.
But it seems the poster is focused on the common cheap carts.
As I said in an earlier thread, who cares if the Sumiko and the Shelter are the same - they're BOTH mediocre! For the same or slightly less the JICO-SAS-1 and Garrot K-3 will run rings around 'em musically.
