Should I go for the original or Classic Records 200g re-issue for the best sound? Thanks!
Best version is an original if one can find 6S or lower pressings. I have six copies of the original lps, two copies of the R2R tape (not bad but not up to a clean set of lps) and a cd copy; forget the cd!
I have heard the Classic version and wasn't impressed. It was on the level of the tape but not as good as the original lps. I'm not sure about the sibilance comment, I haven't noticed that to be a problem.
All of this aside, buy and enjoy this excellent performance. Belafonte at his very best!!
I wonder if anyone here has heard and compared the LP to the 7½" tape? I have both and prefer the tape... there, I've said the unthinkable!
Hey Theresa, come help me in the ensuing "fire storm" now that I have put my foot in it...

I have a few versions of this LP. The Classic one is close enough to the original and it is at least in good shape (new).
The classic one is also less sibilant compared to the original. I can live with either, but getting the original in good condition is just too hard.
will sound better whether you got the original or the Classic resissue.
"Acoustic Polarity" is the issue here. Some people who listen to this recording in "correct" polarity say that they notice huge improvements in naturalness of sound, soundstaging, etc... Others feel that the effects, if audible, are insignificant. Your ears and/or your entire system (especially your loudspeakers) might determine whether or not polarity changes are audible or significant to you. "Polarity" is mistakenly referred to as "phase" by many of us...

Acoustic Polarity - Hmmm. First time that I am hearing this term in 30 years of reading Audio writings.
Instead of hearing a forward movement of the speaker diaphragm, you are hearing the backward movement. So it is a phase issue. Both produces similar sound, but one is more direct and correct.
In amplifiers, some designs are phase inverted and they call it as such.
Anyway, I can hear it easily.
Another popular LP Janis Ian - Breaking silence is also phase inverted. Hear it in the correct phase and it would sound twice as good.

Good luck finding a clean original pressing. It's a common record but those first pressings are usually trashed when you find them. I've got a NM tan label RCA reissue that I picked up dirt cheap. Sounds good 'nuf for me. Not a record I'm so crazy for that I'd pay $$ for a reissue.
might be it but this is a recording that transcends its medium. i have one that says 'recorded on the spot' but dont know if its an OP. i ALSO have the standard bmg cd which is REALLY very good for its ten dollar list price.
you can even hear the squeaking kick drum beater mechanism. my kids (now adults) cannot keep quiet when this is playing, its participation music.

Classic wider dynamics and better bass extension but some loss of hall ambience which is to some extent what this recording is all about.
.....it's way better than the regular Classic reissue......and some consider the 45 set as good sounding as Lps can sound. it's not cheap but does deliver the musical goods in spades; whether you think it's too 'audiophile' or not. kinda like 'Jazz at the Pawnshop'.....some love to hate this recording.fantastic demo disc.
personally, i do like it musically (a guilty pleasure), but rarely listen to it.

Sorry
good answer, for nearly everything!
Please, don't tempt me!
"200 years from now I know I'll enjoy listening to it once again" type LPs.
There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!
Yes it is, Mike.
Only 185 more years until I get to enjoy it again!
Best vinyl is a Stereo 1S/1S/1S/1S made in Indianapolis, Indiana. Very realistic sounding rekkid. Like Belafonte's in Carnegie Hall with you. Very hard to find good original Stereo vinyl of this as it's also a TAS List item.
