I need to get some type of dust cover for my Avid Diva II. The plexiglass one's you see everywhere tend to run 300 bucks and up! If one didn't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for $10 worth of plexiglass, are there other options? I did see a guy on Audiogon who will make you basically the same thing for just over $200 or so but that still seems like an awful lot of money for a plexiglass dust cover. Anyone know a cheaper alternative?
This may be WAY below your standards, but I made a dustcover from foam core presentation board or the stuff that is used to back a picture in a frame. Commonly found where wives like to shop, Jo Ann, Micheal's. A sheet is about $2.50, cut to spec size, & glue together. It ends up weighing onces. The second one I built has beveled edges & balsa legs.
digitaldeckcovers.com. It fits perfect, prevents scratches and they have a variety of colors and materials for under $40.
Orphaned dustcovers show up all the time on ebay. Just look for one with compatible measurements.
i had a custom plexiglass one made to my specs by a local plexiglass fabrication shop. it cost about $75 and its nicely done. google is your friend.
I designed one for my Nottingham Space 294 myself, and they built it in a week for $100.
I bought one from the guy on A'gon for my Avid Diva II and the quality is very good. I've since move the Avid to a wall shelf, and placed my "new" td-124 in it's place. The same dust cover fits the Thorens like a glove.
The Avid now has a split outer sleeve of an lp on it now. Doesn't look the best, but it works.

I have a four sided, top and 3 sides. I wish I had done a half or quarter sheet on the back, enough for only the cables, but in general it works, was cheap ($75), and looks good.

reelsmith's axiom : Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Good thinking. Just as an aside, I stole a similar idea from my neighbor. We use gas grill covers to put over our lawn tractors stored outside. Keeps the elements off year 'round.
Can you say ugly?? I could see those things catching the tone arm.

I use one of my wifes silk scarfs. They are tighly woven and keep the dust out, wide enough to cover a large plinth and have a thumbs up in WAF.
you can have one made from acylic for a lot less than 300, or even 200, bucks, if all you want is a simple box.
Or, if you've got a table saw you can buy the materials and diy. Pretty easy stuff to work with after a few tips from the proprietors, and it'll be even cheaper.
I just use a piece of black silk cloth (credit-where-due: Fretless) but can understand other's concerns about stylus-snagging. However, I've never had an issue, and I prefer the looks to the Turntable Under Glass aesthetics of the tt domes.
Nice deck btw-congrats.

This one is 16" but there must be larger ones.
Goofy. Yet cheap.
The only covers that are reasonably convenient are those that have a hinge and fit on the back of square wooden plinths. The free standing items are a big pain to use. If one is not careful, disaster lurks from accidentally hitting the counterweight on the arm.
Many such free-standing covers have cutouts for the arm/counterweight, or otherwise do not completely seal off the table, so dust seems to get in anyway.
I have a dust cover for my Basis Debut. It now is "used" primarily to collect old magazines. It is simply too much of a hassle to actually use it if one uses the table all of the time. To me, keeping the platter clean is the most important function of a cover, so I do that with a sacrificial record. Once in a while I very carefully dust the rest of the table with a microfibre cloth.
I don't like the idea of draping a towel over the table because of the chance of snagging the cantilever of the cartridge. I don't really think there is either a cheap or convenient cover for the Avid, much less one that has both attributes.
I use one of these and it keeps the dust off of my tt though it does not offer protection if something gets dropped on it and I always put the stylus guard on when I use it.
Regards,
Todd
You know this is really good idea! shouldn't be hard to make something custom fit with fabric from a store and a friend or significant other with a sewing machine. Just think of the WAF, especially if if involved in the project!
