hi v,
the physical size is relatively inconsequential to the performance. the weight range (ie-vertical load) is the primary consideration.ideally a Neuance A or the earlier Alpha would be the recommended Neuance fitment for the Xerxes or any other low-medium weight component (generally <35 lbs for Neuance A.& <30 lbs for the Alpha). if you're purchasing from the original owner, just ask what the platform was used with and its approx weight and you should be fine.tho not the optimum loading match, even the heavier duty Neuance B & Beta models will give substantial performance benefits.
best,
Ken
I was just thinking about you given the interesting events in F1 this year. The Tour is shaping up to be interesting too.
Have you heard anything lately in sub $1K cartridges that you think is a worthy competitor to the DV 17D3?

in a word,
....no.
(at least not to my values)
I'm still equivocating on the 17D3 because of my gain limitations (60dB, right on the edge for 0.3mV) and the alleged set up fussiness/difficulty of that cartridge. If I had an arm with a removable headshell or wand I'd have more enthusiasm for the project.
The cheaper Lyras remain the best of the alternatives that I have heard.
Although I certainly am not following cycling (or F1) like I once did I am looking forward to this year's Tour.
I know your Karat Nova is your Cartridge of choice for the Xerxes x.
Is the 17D3 a step up from my Dynavector 10X5/soundsmith retip ? Does the 17D3 have any advantages over the XX-2?

can't say what the retipped 10X5 accomplishes but the 17D3 is about 2-3 full steps above the standard 10X5.more resolution, more nimble, more tuneful, have greater presence, more accuracy, more powerful dynamics, better tonal contrasts & color, more spaciousness, blah, blah, blah. you get the drift.

primarily in speed and articulation. however, they exhibit somewhat less transparency & air and are much more difficult to achieve tangency with than the XX2. the 17D3karats with their lower output and high resolving powers also place greater demands on the phono preamp's quality.get them set up spot-on and driven properly and they're amazingly rewarding musically and are exceptional values.
