I loved their music and back in the '70's went and saw them live in Arlington Ht's IL. To say they were awful live was an understatement. Within an hour at least half the people at the club had walked out. I made it about 2/3 of the way through before my girlfriend couldn't take it anymore and made me leave.
I guess in the studio they must have done a lot of takes to get their tunes sounding as good as they did. That being said I still play their LPs :)

The "Steppenwolf Live" 2LP set Rocks!! What year did you see them in? Could have been one of John Kay's later incarnations of the band. Btw...where in Arlington Hts. did you see them? I've lived in the north west Chicago suburbs for years....just curious.
Ah, not really live at all but a studio recroding spiffed up with recorded crowd noise. At least that's the story I seem to remember from my teen years.Still, I like it a lot and have owned two vinyl sets.
And for my travels and dog walks, I have virtually everything ever done by Steppenwolf on my iPod.

Wow that album was a "faked" live recording! Never knew that....puts a different light on that LP all together....still fun to listen tho!
It had to have been '73 or '74 because I moved to Phoenix after that. At the time I lived in Arlington hts near the race track though I grew up in the north side of Chitcago in my early years and then in Glenview until '72. If I remember correctly it was a place called "The Cellar" and I also saw The Cryan' Shames there the same year.

I remember The Cellar! Sounds like you saw them right after the original band broke up. Kay could have been using a crappy pick-up band around that time....who knows....maybe even some over-indulgence as well!
