to upgrade my Dynavector P-75 phono preamp. If you had a Nottingham Interspace 'table w/Interspace arm & Sumiko Celebration Cartridge, what would you upgrade to? A used phono preamp would be OK.
Follow Ups:
Which I loved, by the way. But I had an opportunity to pick up the Mini Basis Exclusive slightly used at a great price so I jumped. Unless I win the lottery, I will not be looking for an upgrade.
Good luck.
I built a stock Hagerman Cornet 2. After a few months I began an arduous and complex modification journey. At the end of the project I have a Cornet 2 phono stage that in DIY dollars equals 900 dollars US.
Given the parts cost, a manufacturer with a dealership network would need to charge about 5700 US dollars retail just to break even...
What do you get for the stock 500 dollar investment or my 900 dollars in parts?
Pure single ended triode circuit typology
Zero negative feedback
Tube power rectification
Passive RIAA equalization
A great user group for ongoing support
And Jim Hagerman will answer any questions large or small.
I have taken my Cornet 2 on the road. It has met and exceeded some fairly expensive phono sections costing 5 to 6 thousand dollars. I put it up against some Stereophile Class A phono sections and it more than held up to the competition.
If you want a taste of the high end on a beer budget I can heartily recommend the Hagerman Cornet 2. It will be a keeper! In fact it will probably be quieter in its noise floor than any other piece in your system.
Cheers!

it might be possible to compare your tweaked Cornet 2 with my discrete transistor phono stage! :-))
I too have taken mine on the road and it seems to stack up with anything it's come up with! :-)) And I would suggest it must be less noisy than your tubes? :-))
Regards,
Andy
I've heard transistor gear that isn't.
In my "lowly" Anthem, the best tubes are noisier than the military Sovteks...I'll take the "noisy" ones...I'll even take the Sovteks.
I've missed the sound of my Anthem with every transistor preamp I've heard. However, I'd love to hear a mega-buck SS phono pre.
I'm going to hear tubesy's...I like the guy a lot but I might just have to kill him (I'll make it painless, tubesy...death by 20 year old nubile over dose).
There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!
