I was reffering to the Universal 180 gram re-issues.... the Clapton that you bought is one of them.. these are digital, and they are getting very poor reviews.
The DSOM is an excellent Lp ...and the Metallica, like you mentioned, has already been discussed.
It is too bad that Universal is throwing out these crappy Lp's just to collect the quick cash.. this will hurt the industry, not help it, especially as many titles that Universal says it wishes to release.

Follow Ups:
at least they are making an honest and sincere effort at doing the vinyl reissue project correctly. It is true, of course, that over time analogue master tapes will deteriorate such that comparisons between original issues and reissues are not realistic because we are not dealing with a level playing field. However, Messrs. Hoffman and Gray are doing just fine by me and kudos to WB for having the 'savvy' to engage two of the best industry professionals to supervise their vinyl project. Let's not forget also that WB elected to use RTI for the best possible pressing quality. All things considered a very commendable effort on the part of WB, and as audiophiles we should be happy.
Universal, on the other hand, is pretty clueless. They, by all accounts, are using inferior digital sources (some believe the same masters that are used for the commercial 16 Bit 44.1KHz CD releases) in their reissue programme. On top of that, I understand they have used a pressing facility called GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic to press the discs for the entire world (including the US). This is a facility that I had never before heard of and would appear to have no track record in audiophile vinyl reissues. I strongly suspect too that these discs do not have any 'grooveguard' so do not try and flatten them with the Axiss Disc Flatter or Furutech machines if you get a warped copy.
So shame on Universal Music for their 'hopping on the vinyl bandwagon' for money's sake when they have no idea what this is all about and why the format endures. And .. you'll get no information whatsoever from them or GZ Vinyl for that matter on those reissues. I was glad that I logged on to the Steve Hoffman forum as I was thinking of getting the Van Morrison 'Tupelo Honey' LP. I have since bought a 1980s used US WB copy instead which I am sure will sound far better.
....hash in the highs toward the end of "I Shot The Sheriff". For the most part I would characterize the the sonics of the record as being nothing to get excited about but not horrible either. Not remarkable. I haven't heard the original in a long time, so your info is probably on target for all I know.
I really want to encourage FM to continue selling Lps. That's why I've made the few purchases there that I have. If some of these titles are poorly mastered, it is nothing to blame Fred about. Sign of the times, perhaps. Master tapes don't always hold up well over time. Digital restorations become the necessary evil. Other times, mastering studios have greater skills to offer in the digital domain, while the skilled analog engineers are aging out of the industry. Sigh.

I am just staying clear of the Universal re-issues...
Actually, I buy a couple each week.. I rather keep the $$ in the local economy anyways.
They seem to be unloading everything they put on the shelves.
I also hope they keep carrying vinyl..
Rick
Reading through it, I'm not getting a clear picture on identifying all of the Universal Reissues.... except.... to look for the:
"Back to Black, 60th Vinyl Anniversary, Premium Audiophile Pressing On heavyweight 180 Gram Vinyl in All Original Packaging!"
Sticker on the outer plastic casing. Which mine had. Btw, there were no indications on this Lp about the mastering method! Apparently the corporate intention is to match the original for appearance.
Back to the Hoffman thread. A good heads-up on that one. Although I might be the first one that is able to report on the 461 Ocean Blvd Sonic qualities at this stage. I should stop by there more often.
I'll have another listen tomorrow.
Thanks,
-Steve

"I'll have another listen tomorrow."
It is plainly obvious that the Lp, while perhaps being a nice pressing on good heavy vinyl, does sound like a decent sounding CD. Basic rule I try to follow, if it is a digital re-master, just get the cd.
This one fooled me while at the store. I could have looked at it a little closer, but I doubt I would have been able tell enough about it until taken out of its wrapper.
Thanks for the heads up rich121. Let's get the word out on these Universal "Back to Black" pressings. They seem to be showing up in a deceptive package.
