"Penguin" is more like "Mystery To Me" than Fleetwood Mac's earlier releases. With the departure of Danny Kirwin and Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer over the years, Fleetwood Mac's sound changed dramatically. Christine McVie's songs were a nice addition and some of Bob Welch's tunes are ok, but the blues influence all but vanished. What makes Penquin unique is the inclusion of a song ("The Derelict") written and sung by Dave Walker, and another, "I'm A Road Runner", sung by Walker. (He was only a band member for this one album.) They're my favorite tunes on the album, mainly I think because they're so different from any other Mac tune. I don't consider Penguin to be one of their better releases (I'm biased in preferring the early Mac) but it's definitely one to have for any fan of Fleetwood Mac.Tom

Nice description. Now I'm REALLY intrigued. For me one of the appealing aspects of Mac is following the development of the band through its different line ups while centered around the rythmn section of Fleetwood and McVie. If you listen to Then Play On and then Rumours for me its kinda like "What? I swear the name of the band was the same." But if you play through the collection you see that transformation (sell out?) from the more John Mayhall blues tradition with a good dose of folk to Pop.
I'll definetely be keeping an eye out for Penguin.

I guess i like all of the versions though i prefer the lineup with welch and kirwan better than the later years. Penguin is an unsual album but has some great tracks. three of my personal favorites are heros are hard to find, future games and bare trees. The later mac with nicks and buckingham became a little to pop but i still enjoyed the fleetwood and mcvie rhythm that persists even today.
