I am a new poster motivated to post by the arrival of my birthday present, a Space-Tech Labs P-105 MM/MC phono stage. Since very small manufacturers rarely get accolades, I thought I would give some well deserved praise to Albert of Space-Tech. I have been using the phono stage from my Thor TA-2000, but was restless to try a stand-alone. I thought about of a number of possibilities in used models, e.g., Audio Research, Audio Note, etc., but have been intrigued by Albert's website for a few years and felt I would get better value from a direct seller. I decided to try his flagship P-105 (about $1800) and commenced an email conversation. In short, Albert was very responsive, informative and timely in his delivery. The product? I've only had it in my system for two days, but the improvement in every area over the $8500 Thor (its a full function preamp) is amazing- night and day! The Linn tech who came to install a new cartridge yesterday was also very impressed with the open, detailed sound. I never want to listen to a CD again! I would definitely urge anyone who is considering this price range for a phono stage to give Space-Tech in Vancouver a look.
You should drop in his store. He's got lots of really nice vintage pieces and lots of examples of his own products. The only problem I had was that there are so many different models and Albert thinks they're all almost equally good. I think he does good work but it's hard to make a choice with that many similarly priced items. He's a nice guy though and I never felt he was trying to sell me anything. Worth a visit if you're in Vancouver.
I live in NYC, but I'm sure I'd really enjoy visiting his shop. I have dealt with lots of individuals making/fixing tube gear and am at this point weary indefinite delays, failed promises and unresponsiveness. However, Albert gave me a very professional level of comfort from the start and he didn't disappoint. He researched my amp and preamp to make sure they are compatible with the P-105 and set the MC section to accept my cartridge. My wife listened earlier and she was blown away!
Albert does seem to have a myriad of choices. Given the cost of first rate commercial used phono stages and the relative low cost of the P-105, I decided to see what his ultimate one sounded like.
