Every record had a huge deep wide scratch across the grooves..
I call it the 'divorce hate' scratch.
Horrible to see.

Once, came across a pile of about 400 classic rock LPs, which included many Zappa titles, all in otherwise NM condition, except that every single side had finger nail scratches that clearly were deliberate. Another furious spouse....
I have seen surface scratches that did not affect playback. For a rare Zappa, I'd be willing to take a chance!

You're absolutely right! What I did not mention in my post was that I did take a chance -given the classic titles in the pile - and it turned out that virtually all the scratches were inaudible.
The old fingertip test to check whether a scratch does go deep enough to be 'feelable' really works.
Too bad! You never know till you try.
