The manufacturer recommends to fill only half of the reservoir, but how do I tell how much that is? I must have missed something obvious ...

It would be interesting if you played it undamped for a while and then described the difference in sound after installing the damping fluid.
When I bought my Technics SL-1200, I installed the damping fluid into the damping trough while playing a record. Jim Howard was listening from the listening position and he thought the damping fluid made a significant improvement in cartridge tracking. What I heard was tightening in the bass and improved clarity.
Thanks,

I make one-millimeter markings on a toothpick then stick it in the empty well to see how deep the well is. Then I slowly fill it with fluid, measuring the depth with the toothpick as I go. That way, you can see when it reaches the desired level.

Good idea. Thank you.
When I bought a used Kuzma Stogi and Stabi S arm.. The TT was delivered by previous owner mostly set up.
I listened after I stuck on my cartridge. And the sound was muddy and flat.
He had way way too much dampening fluid in the trough!
I sucked out most of it, until the fluid was just barely touching the paddles,
WOW great sounding.
So IMO what he sold it for was his own error in the fluid level. Lucky me!
So from experience.. in any arm with a damped fluid trough, the level should be the minimum which offers the best sound.
It may be hard to judge by eye (if you can't see with the arm in place)
But you ear will tell you the moment between no touch, just a little (best) and way too much fluid.
Good luck.
I concur with your suggestion. The optimum fill point is dependent on the compliance of the cartridge so the "fill to half" shouldn't be considered a specific instruction.

Isn't the proper amount of damping fluid dependent on the cartridge being used?
