I just picked up a Kenwood KD-3070 on eBay for a decent price, and I'm wondering about cartridge options. I've read here that an Ortofon Bronze wouldn't be out of place on this table, but I don't want to go that high. Ortofon Red, maybe.
Are there others that inmates have tried or might recommend? It's been 30 years since I bought a cartridge and I could use some suggestions. Thx in advance.

...For the suggestions. I ended up with an Audio Technica AT95E from the bargain bin at Needle Doctor, where Brian mounted it on a new AT HS-1 headshell and shipped it for free.
It's working very well in the Kenwood table, with quiet surfaces and luscious sound, judging from the "Cosi Fan Tutti" highlights played as a test. I very familiar with this recording, and it has never sounded better.
For a shade less than 60 bucks, I'm very pleased with the outcome.
A Shure is a safe bet with those vintage tables!
...an SL-1600 for 33s and 45s and a Dual 1009 for 78s. Note that the 97 on the Dual has an M78 stylus.

I was going to suggest dropping back a bit, to an AT-95E as about the right point on that curve. I think that you might get 94% of what that nice old DD Kenwood has to give for 40-ish bucks. On a recent vintage Denon DD I set up, it put out fine sound for the price. Check the "Needledoctor" website's open box section; they sometimes blow these out for 20-30 bucks- a steal.
You are correct. ND has one for $29. Thanks for the suggestion. I am looking for the right point on the curve since I don't play a lot of vinyl. The TT is for a second system.
Nice nude elliptical on aluminum cantilever. Smooth. very musical cart. just gets out of the way of the music.
Opus 33 1/3
I've been using one for a few years now. Very easy to live with. I've certainly heard things I liked less for more money.
Hi Henry,
I have little to no experience with modern MM cartridges, but I noticed that 2juki sells the AT440MLa for $165 with free shipping. Would that be better than the AT120ET?
Best regards,
John Elison
Futzed with VTA until I was blue in the face. To me, it sounded a lot like the OC9ML/II, which I also could not get rid of fast enough. The 120ET is a real sweetheart, like the AT33EV.

Ah! Good to know!
Good question.
The 440MLa may well be "better", but I'd stick with the 120ET Henry recommended.
Microline cartridges are fussy. They can sound absolutely wonderful. But, if the stars are not all aligned they can be dreadful.
I think an elliptical-stylus cartridge is a safer recommendation.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Having owned both, I always thought the 440 sounded a bit thin compared to the other one.
