How about Nuages, Images, Iberia, the great piano works, Children's Corner, all of which have great recordings even from the Golden Age of hi-fi. BTW, only one "e" in Debussy.
Follow Ups:
OK, I'll play.
Don't miss the string quartet. Several good versions, all beautifully recorded, all of which are paired with the Ravel SQ (also gorgeous):
1. Budapest: Columbia MS 6015 (my favorite)
2. Juilliard: RCA LSC 2413
3. Quartetto Italiano: Philips LY 835 361
Also too often overlooked are his hauntingly beautiful songs - - too many to mention individually, but two of my all-time favorites are Paysage Sentimental and Le Jet D'Eau (Fountain). A great set is (Elly Ameling, Dalton Baldwin et al):
1. Claude Debussy Melodies EMI C 165-16371/4
Now you've done it: there goes my afternoon . . .
Those are great choices. For me his solo piano music is his greatest achievement in many ways. No point in leaving any of it out, there are several excellent complete sets. The Preludes, Images, Suite Bergamasque, Children's Corner suite, Arabesques (these two short pieces are among my top favorites), En blanc et noir and Pour le piano definitely, the other piano duets and various other short pieces (that include some of his most famous tunes) are all essential.
Then, his late great chamber music pieces: the trio for flute, harp and viola, and the cello and violin sonata; the earlier string quartet; the Rhapsody for clarinet, and the three Nocturnes for orchestra (including Nuages). I envy you if you are discovering all of this for the first time.
I also love Debussy's piano music; Preludes,Imagages, Estampes.
It's like a Renoir painting transformed into music.
