I think you're right - Technics are trying to establish their position for high performance turntables based on solid engineering. If they pitched the price too low then people wouldn't take them seriously enough and assume they were gunning for the Clones.
The interview I saw in HFNRR had the designer saying that they had "eliminated cogging" and suggested that the original design was prone to cogging under some situations. This must surely be a Charm Offensive to win over any Belt Drive Zealots...er no offense to any Zealots out there... ;)

The way I see it if you watch the marketing video done by the lady that's running Technics, who in my opinion unless they are lying like lying liars is a true analog hifi enthusiast, the effort to remake the SL1200 meant finding the 80something engineers that still lived (because they had completely forgotten the art of turntable engineering) and re-learning how to do it, train a new team and then finally put the product together.
All the while she was probably (now this is my own thinking) fighting against the more "modern" Panasonic brass who hoped she would fail spectacularly.
IF the video reflects the true passion they put into the product and isn't just a Japanese-style marketing snow job, then the team inside Panasonic that created the new SL is, IMO, just as passionate and worthy as the VPI team of my audio dollars.
+1 on Manny E's comments, and quite possibly more worthy than VPIIf Technics planning for new entries in the audiophile field comes to fruition count me a big fan!
Seriously considering a new SL1200

If anything, the new deck could only get better; with the availability of new devices and fresh thinking, I think it would have been an exciting project for the new engineers. It is quite likely that the younger engineers had never even used a turntable before and would have been very curious to see the final outcome. As long as the input requirements were clearly defined, any good engineer should be able to achieve the solution (with reference to the original design notes and documentation.) At my work place, some of the new grads have become so used to downloads they were surprised to see me still buying CDs (which to them was more "obsolete" than vinyl which still at least held some novelty value for them!)
