wrote some great books, articles, and liner notes over the years. Excellent sense of humor too.

Nat Hentoff was the main instigator behind my lifelong interest in jazz. At some point during the mid-1950s, just out of curiosity, I picked up a copy of Downbeat magazine. At the time Hentoff was a writer/critic there and something about his style and enthusiasm got me hooked on the music.
Later he went off in some other, but probably related, directions in his writing and, while I didn't always agree with him on certain issues-gun rights and abortion, for example-I've still maintained a healthy respect for him as a writer and individualist with well-considered views.
He'll be missed.
Sad to hear. We recently lost Rudy Van Gelder as well.
I hope 2017 treats us Jazz lovers better.
