I remember when I used to go visit my elderly bachelor uncle after he retired to Hollywood (Florida), aka "Holvood". One afternoon I came back from my run at about 6 PM to find my uncle in a rare bad mood. He said, "Do you know what time it is?" In an accusatory tone of voice. When I responded with the correct time, he revealed the reason for his ire by reminding me that we would never make it to a restaurant in time for the Early Bird specials.
Now I am only a little younger than he was then. Fortunately, I am not living in Florida and do not give a damn about Early Bird specials.
Follow Ups:
Jerry: I'm not force-feeding myself a steak at four-thirty to save a couple of bucks.
Priceless!
My friend here in DC has a T-shirt.
In Hollywood or Hallandale, you could drive down Route 1 and see the lines of geezers (not wheezers) waiting to get into restaurants at 5 PM.
A geezer neighbor of mine explained to me that for a large part of the year (when it gets dark before 5PM) many older folks hit up the early bird specials because their cataracts force them to not see well enough to drive safely when it's dark outside. Something to do with how the lights from oncoming traffic plays hell with their vision.
So don't laugh, it might happen to you if you're able to live long enough. ;-)
Cheers,
SB
That's a sad story, but perhaps sadder still is the fact that most of the pensioners who migrate to South Florida are on very limited budgets, and that more than cataracts is why they indulge in the Early Bird Specials. Not that there's anything wrong with that. However, there is also nothing wrong with finding a little humor in coping with life's dirty tricks. In fact, I find it necessary.
By the way, these days, if you have Medicare, you can get rid of those cataracts with relatively painless and very safe surgery and for relatively low cost.
Correctly attributed Lew!
"Del", not "La". My bad for relying upon my memory and not Google.
Priceless.
I think that was the Cadillac episode?
