Beefheart was one of a kind. I have a bunch of his albums, but I never really listened to them. The day he died, I put on "Tarotplane" from Mirror Man. His voice blew me away..Howlin' Wolf was obviously a big influence..."Safe as Milk" is a great place to start figuring out Beefheart.
He was a musical treasure.Sui generis,,,

His music was clearly influenced by the blues as well as R&B. One of the things that's apparent to me as I listen to his work is that he seemed to be having a lot of fun with this music. In particular, listen to "Grow Fins" on The Spotlight Kid. The band reminds me of a drunk stumbling down the street bouncing off anything in arm's reach. The Captain, unhappy with his woman's behavior after arriving home, informs her that unless things get better he's "going to grow fins and go back in the water again and leave you land-lubbin' women alone".
Absolutely classic Beefheart. I just love it.
