The image shows the mains plug on a Technics SL-7 I was recently given by a neighbor. I assumed that the existing plug is a standard European type, and I purchased what I thought would be the suitable easy-peasy adapter from Amazon. To my great disappointment, it isn't. Perhaps the existing plug is proprietary? Can anyone come up with a reason not to chop off the existing plug, and solder on a conventional two-blade plug?
Follow Ups:
keep the plug and use an adaptor, that will let you find the correct plug polarity.
:)
Chef- arguments about plug standards aside, unless you're obsessed with preserving its historic character you could just chop that Euro plug off and put on a good, new AC plug, assuming you can set the voltage and frequency of the AC input on that turntable to your mains (US- I assume 120V/60Hz). A fine hospital-grade plug costs little, makes as perfect electrical contact as feasible, and lasts forever. (The moniker "Hospital Grade" just means it has passed brutal durability tests and has a clear acrylic plastic contact block enabling you to visually confirm wire contact within the plug body). All that for 12 bucks! Not very pretty to look at, but some come in whitish or clear plastic, some with a little neon lamp inside, well.. they aren't very attractive either but possess good engineering attributes.
This type of plug is used in many countries around the world both 110/120v and 220/230/240 v, both 50 and 60 Hz. It is not exclusive to Europe where it has been largely superseded by the Shuko plug which has provision for an earth (ground) connection. If the Technics turntable does not have provisiin for altering the operating voltage then ensure that it is correct for you as unless you know the history of the table the plug provides no clue.
Although this type is not the current standard for Europe it is still a standard plug and adaptors should be easy to obtain. You can, for example at airports, buy world standard stacks of plugs which fit ino each other. This plug type will be included. There is no need to cut it off.
I attach a link of plug and voltage standards for various countries. The plug you have is Type C.

PAR: Sorry, but that the Euro plug (type CEE 7/16) would have been largely superseded by the Schuko (= Schutzkontakt) plug isn't really correct - these rather exist in parallel, depending on the device. I.e., the Euro plug is only meant for safety class II (aka double-insulated) devices cosuming up to 2.5 A, whereas at least in Germany safety class II devices with higher current consumption will rather sport the so-called "contour plug" (= "Konturenstecker", type CEE7/17) - and Schuko (CEE 7/4) will usually only be fitted on safety class I devices, although you'll nowadays more likely find a CEE7/7 type combo plug used instead, as that fits to both our German style Schuko and the French/Belgian style (CEE 7/5).
So, if you'd walk through for example a German Media Markt, Saturn or Expert Technomarkt, you'd be likely to find Euro plugs for example on electric shavers, not so power-hungry hifi components like turntables, tuners, cd players and also on many LCD TV sets, battery chargers et cetera... Whereas for example hairdryers and vacuum cleaners would typically rather sport the contour plug and stuff like washing-machines or PCs the CEE 7/7 type plug.
And I'm not aware that there would have been any major change to that ever since my childhood (current age ~ 47 5/6, so that would translate to roundabout the mid 70s...).
Granted though, the Euro plug as such indeed isn't quite as common anymore - but not due to being superseded by Schuko, but rather because many of those devices, that would formerly have come with a Euro plug, will nowadays rather be wall-wart-powered instead. Most of these little wall-warts will sport a Euro-plug-like power connector, though...

Thanks Manfred for that information. In fact you reminded me that we even use it in the UK for shavers and electric toothbrushes despite our deviant 13 amp plugs.
Ah Munich. What a delightful city. I haven't been to the High End show for 3 years so I am hoping to attend in 2017 and stay again with my friends in Neubiberg.
Of cousre the show is only one attraction. I have to admit that Munich beer is the best in the world, for my tastes at least.
Anyway the main point is that the OP should easily find an adaptor to US standards.
Best Wishes
Pete
Pete: I'd suggest you to try some of the beers from smaller Bavarian breweries next time, like for example from Maxlrainer (Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain) or HTB (Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee). Quite a few of these have more character than the standard stuff from the big names like Paulaner, Spaten et cetera...
Haven't been to Neubiberg for quite a while, though that's not far from my parents' place in Fasangarten. But I wouldn't be surprised if it had also grown significantly in the meantime, just like many of the villages around (Unterhaching, Taufkirchen, Oberhaching...).

Thanks Manfred. I certainly will try to find them next year. Sadly Bavarian beer is quite hard to find in the UK these days. Weissbier is available but little in the way of Helles. Can't even find Lowenbrau. A little from Paulaner, that's it.
Anyway I started to make my arrangements for May and the MOC on Sunday so I am really looking forward to it.
Best Wishes
Pete
that should fit into any power plug adaptor. I presume you can buy them in the US, you can egt them all over the world
If it is, changing or adapting the plug won't help. The TT needs to be re-wired.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
the tt has switchable ac and was being used in Europe.

That's what I would do, assuming it works on standard 60-Hz, 120-VAC.
Good luck,
John Elison
Probably need one like below, but I don't know why you couldn't chop it off and replace with US type ...
