Yea, the only thing I can think of that could have caused it is maybe it was stored in the attic above the garage and was exposed to heat (it was from Huntington Beach) every year for 30-40 years. I've just ordered a cork and rubber mat, and I'll just cut the center out using the original mat as a pattern. Mine has already had the thrust plate replaced, and I'm sending it to Stereorehab in a month or two, who will polish the spindle and tune it up generally.

I would check out Herbie's Way Excellent II Mat first. I think he has one that will work on your table without milling. He has different diameters and thicknesses. Just measure the diameter an thickness of your mat and match it up.
