Both are moving coil, and were among the best available when new and current.
Assuming both cartridges can be purchased for approximately the same price, and then rebuilt, which would be the better cartridge for playback of mono LPs ?
Criteria under 4g VTF, preferably under 3g.
Wide Bandwidth, at least flat to 15khz, 20khz would be better.
Thank you,
Ross

Is there a particular reason you want to rebuild such an old cartridge? Technological advancements aside, any example of that era will very likely have perished or stiffened elastomers. Even IF the cartridges can be rebuilt, there is no guarantee that the performance would achieve anything close to a modern cartridge with a line contact stylus which will track at much lower VTF. Of course if you have a high mass arm, then I quite understand if you want a very low compliance cartridge like the Fairchild 225A.
For very likely less than the cost of a rebuild since a retip alone is easily > USD250, you are going to achieve superior performance from a new/modern cartridge with a Line Contact stylus.
Mono LPs require a 1 mil tip (25um), and typical line contact tips more than meet those requirements with superior tracing ability than an oversized conical tip.

I want a true mono cartridge, capable of wide bandwidth performance.
A new cartridge that meets those criteria starts at about $1k (Ortofon CG25). Meaning a rebuild of a vintage cartridge may be several hundred dollars cheaper including cost of purchase.
I have read that many have commissioned the rebuild of both the ESL and the 225 A. The service includes new suspension (replacing hardened rubber), and the installation of a better cantilever and stylus. Some have specified line contact or other profiles. And there is the choice of 1mil or .7mil to consider.
Hence my original question.
Thanks,
Ross
Get a GE VR-II with a new 1 mil diamond stylus (you might need to try a few to find the best one.) You should be easily able to find a good one well under $100, and new styli are plentiful and cheap. On a good modern medium-high mass tonearm it will track like a champ at 3 to 3.5 grams. These cartridges sound fantastic with a simple vacuum-tube preamp, loaded at 100K (try JE Labs for a great schematic.)
And I know the styli are ready available.
What I don't have is the button to mount the stylus.
May look into that as an intermediate step.
Thanks.
