Performance, sound....?
Follow Ups:
The Ma was made in 1980. He hasn't made another recording and perhaps it would be a better recording and he would play it differently. I don't know. It's a very safe performance, every thing connected, legato, little drama. The vinyl sound is slightly boomy with not a lot of definition. Surfaces are quite good. This is the re-issue and maybe the original pressings would sound better. The gatefold works nicely.
Enders plays them like he's aware of historically informed performances but he doesn't go all the way. He's a modern cellist. It's very rhetorical playing with phrases set off from each other so you better understand what Bach was trying to say. He's also superior technically and they were both about the same age, 24. The sound is A+. The surfaces not so much. That was disappointing but I'm learning to clean the discs with wet/dry vacuum before every play and that seems to help reduce the noise. The gatefold is problematic, not designed well and difficult to get the discs in and out of the sleeve(s).
I hope this helps.

Very informative.
But didn't Ma record them again in the 90's? Sony, maybe?
If he did, I can't find it on amazon. LOL, my only source of knowledge.

Here you go:
Of course, you're absolutely right. I was stuck on the vinyl side of amazon!
On order and thanks for the sleuthing.
It will be interesting to see if there's a significant difference between the two.

vs. the older, more "straight" interpretation on CBS.
BTW, I bought the CBS reissues, and the vinyl is quiet, at least my copy is. Recommended, and the price is good.
I finally finished the survey of Yo Yo Ma's first traversal. Pretty dull but the worst part was the 4th. It was pressed off center so everything sounded out of tune. Also, they seem to be recorded in a slightly noisy environment. Too bad, guess I'll give it away.I just got the remake on CD. Yes, it's different, more dynamic and varied but still doesn't hold a candle to the Enders but I'm still investigating. One thing I thought weird and irritating was splitting the 4th suite between the two CDs. No sense to that at all.
I'm not sure I can recommend the vinyl of the Enders on Berlin Classics, it's just too noisy. Go for the CD if you're interested.

Agree about the surfaces of the re-issue. I bundled it with another recording and wound up paying about $27 for the three lp set and no shipping charges.
I'm looking forward to the later set.
Thanks for the tip.
