RIP Rudy Van Gelder. I certainly have a lot of his recording work. What a legacy! Hard to imagine what the jazz recording world would have been like without him.

So glad I'm able to enjoy his art at home and share with friends.
RIP RVG.

"... only a very few individuals understand as yet that personal salvation is a contradiction in terms."
I have found the RVG stamp on many of my classical VOX records. Usually on the purple label pressings, but not always. I have a 5 lp Bartok box that has RVG on all 10 sides.
sorting through my Blue-Note records to find in the jacket notes who the recording engineer was. RVG did quite a few. Those I am grateful to have and am playing them through.
With regard to life and death I offer this:
A vivid and spot-on quote from Shakespear's "As You Like It"
"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms;
And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything."

I posted a link to an interview with Rudy done by a friend of mine. At the time of this interview in 1995, it was only the second interview Rudy had allowed. I posted this several years ago, but some here may not have seen it or would like to read it again. Rest in peace Rudy. Thank you for your many great recordings and mastered lps.
Thanks for posting that interview.
Read the interview. Close to the end, RVG says he is happy to see vinyl go as it was both inaccurate and a bitch to work with. To make things worse, he applauds digital, and says if it doesn't sound good it's the fault of the folks doing the work, not the medium itself. Egads! What is such heresy doing on VA? Moderator! Moderator! ;)
JR: What are your feelings on digital versus analog?
RVG: The linear storage of digital information is idealized. It can be perfect. It can never be perfect in analog because you cannot reproduce the varying voltages through the different translations from one medium to another. You go from sound to a microphone to a stylus cutting a groove. Then you have to play that back from another stylus wiggling in a groove, and then translate it back to voltage. The biggest distorter is the LP itself. I've made thousands of LP masters. I used to make 17 a day, with two lathes going simultaneously, and I'm glad to see the LP go. As far as I'm concerned, good riddance. It was a constant battle to try to make that music sound the way it should. It was never any good. And if people don't like what they hear in digital, they should blame the engineer who did it. Blame the mastering house. Blame the mixing engineer. That's why some digital recordings sound terrible, and I'm not denying that they do, but don't blame the medium.

His digital remasters are awful. The originals and analogue copies are fine. Sort of what happened to to the Mercury Living Presence recordings when they hit digital.
did some of his best, most incredible stuff with some of the best, most incredible dates ever.
The problem with BN is it's always held up as the standard and anything non BN is considered lesser.
Just not true.
At least props where given to Prestige.

You have that right and let's not forget Verve too. Jimmy Smith, Wes Mongomery, wow! Rudy shares my view that some of the most interesting "performances" that he recorded were the early Prestige ones. Early Trane, early Miles, early Jazz Messengers etc.
First I've ever read with RVG. Thanks for sharing.
i just heard about it tonight at a listening session at Audio Element in pasadana california from on of the other listeners.
...regards...tr
indicative of not only a great date, but a great sound capture of it.
That cat worked with ALL the cats.
Wonderful accomplishments he achieved over the decades.
What the world of optometry may has lost pales in comparison to what the world of recorded sound gained.
RIP.

He totally set up the Jazz world as we know it today. A true visionary!
R.I.P.
How do you pick one to celebrate his accomplishments? Thanks RVG! RIP
To be honest I didn't know he was still around. I have a bunch of his "The RVG Edition" remasters and seeing his name on jazz recordings almost seemed the norm.
It is good to know he lived 91yrs. I think he would of been aware of how much us jazz fans appreciated him. An honor he very much deserved.
THANK YOU RUDY, FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC!
from discogs
In the fifty plus years that Rudy has been working it is estimated that he has recorded, mixed and mastered over 2000 albums not only for Blue Note and Prestige, but also for Verve Records, Impulse!, CTI Records and many others.

Two things came to mind, he must have been a nice guy, so many people worked with him multiple times. Musicians who could have requested anyone, and they went to Rudy.
I just digitized "Night Hawk" two days ago, and I had thought to myself, what a fine recording it was. Yup, Rudy's work.
More bad news... Hopefully there are a few modern day engineers who have learned from one of the masters.
RIP.
but the achievement is well worth celebrating.
A few people make most of history :). RIP.
