I need a good matched parri of Telefunken smooth plate 12ax7s. Any suggestions on where to buy them? I'm guessing eBay is a bad idea?

But Upscale Audio is a great choice of top quality tubes. Since its a phono preamp you'll want the best quality tubes with the least microphonics possible.
I've been buying tubes from Upscale Audio for over 10 years now and I have never received a single bad tube from them. Each tube is tested and the results are written on each tube's box. A label is placed on one side of the tube's box with the individual test results written on it.

Thanks!
I always found them to have fair prices and excellent service.
I got my last lot off Asylum trader from a regular poster in the forums. No problems and tubes did improve my Cornet. Jim McShane also has good stuff plus will steer you right.

The JJ ECC803s gold pin is a much lower cost alternative you might also consider. It has long plates and a spiral wound heater. They have a very Tele-like sound for about 20% or less of what real Teles willc set you back. NOS phono grade smooth plates are not going to be easy to find either. I really like the JJs in the phono and line of my CAT SL1.
Matched pairs of Tele's ain't cheap.
Jim McShane or one of the other vendors that sponsor the Asylum would be a good place to start. Click on the home page to see sponsors.

especially for vintage tube like TFK. Some risk for sure but if one willing to spend time to study seller's feedback and listing, it is still a very good source for vintage stuff.
