Mickey likes the revised ifi Micro iPhono 2 MM/MC Phono Preamplifier. See link below. A couple people in the comments section also found it to be an amazing value.

I found it very dissapointing to hear that Darren/Avatar has been dropped as the US distributor for iFi and AMR. I own an AMR DP777 that I bought second hand on A-gon. Darren treated me well despite not being an original owner. He championed the AMR and iFi products like nobody's business. I can't imagine what someone at AMR was thinking.
There are plenty of people that like the first version. As to what level of phono stage it bests I dont know. I generally find giant killer discussions to be speculative and most often free of factual comparison.
Too bad we all dont have bottomless wallets so as to try any phono stage regardless of price.

After decades of penny-pinching and now that I have achieved the status of old fart, I am thinking seriously of buying one or two of the legendary pieces on the used market, just to be able to say that I have heard them in my system and to know where my baseline phono stages stand, by comparison. I've been a good boy, and I deserve it.
Yes you do deserve it! LOL

About being able to compare different phono stages as that is the only way know what sounds best. As John found out with the Budgie, impedance matching is critical for optimal performance.
If anyone purchases the new version, a comparison to other phono preamps would be much appreciated.

I'm going to try the Budgie with my new VTA SP14 preamp. I believe it has input impedance substantially higher than 100,000-ohms. I'll let you know how it sounds in a week or so after I complete the SP14 kit.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts.
Considering how little it must actually do, it is good it is a small size!
I wonder what gains you would get with an upgraded power supply? Maybe, they've eliminated the necessity for that, too.
I bought an early version of the JLTi phono stage when they were made in Oz. They claimed a wall wart was all that was necessary for top performance.
Fortunately for me, a friend who knew a great deal about electronics built a fully regulated power supply for me and adapted the JLTi for it. I found a significant improvement in dynamics, bass resolution, and spatiality.
The JLTi was an Allen Wright design and about that time production was moved to Switzerland under the Vacuum State company. They offered an outboard power supply as an option to the wall wart. I didn't continue to follow them but it is possible the wall wart version was discontinued due to lack of interest.
From my experience, I wouldn't be surprised.

It is impossible to speculate without looking at the circuit topology, but the higher power supply voltage may translate to improved input overload margin.
However, even with the previous 9V supply with sufficient current capability, it is possible to use a boost converter to get higher voltages where needed. This comes with a noise penalty. In which case the new power supply maybe to eliminate the use of a Boost Converter.
I have the first version and there are noise spikes from the SMPS which are at quite a significant amplitude. It does sound pretty good though. The noise figures for the iPhono2 are significantly better.
