to place a slice of ME under the stylus tip, with the cartridge mounted in the tonearm, and then to use only the cue-ing device to lower the stylus down on top of the ME and then raise it back up off the ME. Back and forth motion is verboten, and that's one good way to avoid it. I've read about this technique elsewhere, but I have never tried it.
Follow Ups:
The "trick" is to lower and raise the stylus vertically into the Magic Eraser, never move sideways.
Also it may be a good idea to follow up with a regular stylus brush just to be sure none of the micro fibers remained on the stylus via static cling. You don't want to start "cleaning" your record grooves with those.
I've been using a Magic Eraser since I first read about it here a few years ago. That means with multiple cartridges and no problems by following this procedure, only clean styli. ;^)

Miles is generally credited with having said that there are "no wrong notes". I wonder if this Thelonius quote was being quoted by Miles, when and if he said it. Anyway, as gods of bebop, they were undoubtedly of one mind on the subject.

Lew, I found that in "Thelonious Monk, The Life and Times of an American Original", a bio I have by Robin Kelley. That is a wonderful history of Monk's life by the way.I've read a couple of biographies on Miles also but can't say I remember that being attributed to him. But with my memory now I couldn't be sure. :^(
BTW, I added another portrait I did for an art class, in addition to the Miles I posted elsewhere. I thought it would be fun to create my own versions of the three favorite musicians that influenced my moniker. Mingus is the third but I don't have him framed yet.
Sorry for sideways presentation.

I don't know if I have ever seen Monk without a hat on.
I'll have to take a look at the 10 or 12 CDs that I own. I'd get up now but I the front half of an 80lb dog in my lap.
Nice picture, when you get the last one framed, please post a photo of all three of them. I've always wished that I had artistic talent. I'm much better with a wrench than a paint brush. I used to be pretty good with a spray gun, or an air brush, if I could tape it off. Free hand, no good.
Thanks Jeff. I hadn't done anything in art for decades, using photography as my artistic outlet for many years. But I wanted portraits to hang in the music room so took an adult education art class a couple of years ago. The instructor guided us to pastels which I'd never worked with before.
And thanks for the suggestion to post all three once Mingus is framed.
Most photos I've seen of Monk were with one hat or another as well. But I remembered seeing one of him with the bamboo shades which I really thought was cool. It came from his gig at The Five Spot along with Coltrane. I worked from B&W photos for all three portraits, preferring to add my own colors to better personalize them.

Yup, at least on the front and back cover of 11 Monk CDs, I only found one on the back of Monk Quartet & Coltrane at Carnibie Hall with no hat. And that was a small photo.
If I ever become wealthy, I would get Ronnie Wood paintings or if too expensive or unattainable then framed prints.
I'll look forward to seeing your work.
