I recently ordered a K&K Maxxed-Out phono preamp from Kevin Carter. I made the faceplate from a piece of 3/8" thick mesquite that I had. The faceplate for the 12P17L linestage I recently built was resawn from the same board. Proper alignment of the holes for the control buttons and LED's was a measure 3 times and drill once task. The components are all attached to a single board so accuracy is essential. My unit has MM and MC sections. Using a Benz H2 cart but will soon mount a Denon 103R that has a ruby cantilever, elliptical stylus and a CNC milled aluminum body.
This phono stage is dead quiet in contrast to the homebrewed unit that I built and used for a number of years. Listened to Joni Mitchell - "Blue" the other night. Imaging and timbre were great. The highs that Joni can sing were clear and emotionally moving. Should be the last phono stage that I will ever need.

nice work! It's a great preamp. I re-skinned mine too, I'll post a picture of it soon.
...getting the etching done as you did was brilliant. Very impressive.
Kevin knows his stuff and is one of the most honest straight forward guy in the industry. It should be enjoyable for many years to come.
Enjoy the ride.

I have had my K&K phono stage since 2001 and it has gone through various upgrades. It has been the ONLY component that has stayed the course. Everything around it changes, but it remains.
Once your preamp has time to break in, you are going to absolutely love it.

That looks gorgeous. Just out of interest, how did you do the logo and lettering? It looks engraved.
I see that you are about to change your cartridge to one similar in many ways to my one which I installed this week. My 103R has a sapphire cantilever with a fineline stylus (ESC Paratrace) and malachite body. The best cartridge that I have heard in my 50 years of this hobby and which IMO outclasses my previous Lyras. I am sure that you are going to enjoy a terrifc time.
The control button-LED array was relocated from the original position as was the power switch to seek a better balance and presentation in regards to the wood grain. A print-out was made up of the graphics and a local trophy shop scanned it and laser etched the faceplate. Didn't want to give the impression that I engraved the lettering myself. The prep work was the more difficult part of the task. I just don't have the equipment to do the engraving.

looks great big muck! really nice work.
So cool man. Outa sight....
Impressive, your attention to detail has not gone unnoticed.
Did you make that as well?
I made the cabinet a few years ago as well. Bubinga and cherry for the cabinet with birch veneered ply for the shelves.
Nice work !!!
