I have been quite happy with the sonics of the Parks Audio Budgie tube phono preamp and CineMag SUT combo with my two LOMCs, but hated the hassle of unhooking the SUT when trying MMs or HOMCs. I've had a Hagerman Bugle 2 on the shelf for 6 months and found it played well above its weight but was MM/HOMC only and my two favorite carts are a Soundsmith retipped Denon DL0-103 and my trusty Dynavector 20XL, both LOMCs.
What to do? Get a Hagerman Piccolo 2 Head amp.
After hookup, I left the Hagerman twins on for 36 hours, then sat down to listen. First up, RLJ's debut LP, an original MoFi. Nice!, Better bass extension and control than the Budgie/SUT. More dynamic, too. The string bass opening on "Easy Money" never sounded better. Good through the mids, but maybe just a touch below the Budgie/SUT. Highs were clear, extended and detailed. No glare, no grain.
Later LPs included Thelma Houston's direct disk of "I Got The Music In Me.," Janis Ian's "Breaking Silence" and Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel." These LPs supported the strong first impression from RLJ's LP.
I cannot think of a better sounding, more flexible phono front end than the Hagerman combo. I've certainly not heard better at the price point.

Hi, H,
Other than the casework, what's the main difference between the original Piccolo and the Piccolo 2?
Tom
Never tried the original with a Bugle.
