Hi Musetap. Have you ever seen an original DSM? Maybe you own one or two?
About 6 years ago I went to a daytime estate sale because I had seen on their site what looked like a reproduction of a famous Robert Johnson LP cover on Columbia Records. The LP cover was by Burt Goldblatt who did a lot of famous jazz LP covers.
I got to the sale about 4 hours early and was about sixth in line. The guy in front of me arrived 7 hours prior to the start of the sale. When we were let in as we walked up the inside stairs the guy in front of me reached up and quickly pulled a print off the wall. It was the actual art work for the LP cover. It had been marked at $60 and I was crestfallen.
I guess we all have our "the one that got away" stories and that is mine.

Follow Ups:
Not sure if his son Tony has any but would imagine if anyone does it's him. There are LOTS of DSM prints (only have one) and other pieces usually available on eBay, some music related, others not. He was a prodigious working illustrator so there are many examples of his work in all types of settings: magazine and book covers, ads, posters, et al.
I'm happy with the record covers, BUT if I could find an original piece for, say, $60.00, well I'd be MIGHTY glad to add it to the collection.
I remember when you first posted about the Burt Golblatt and thinking how frustrating that must have been.
THAT is a truly iconic piece of recording history.
The dealer probably sold it to Eric Clapton!

He had arrived 7 hours prior to the start of the sale solely for that painting. He had also traveled 4 hours to get there. It turned out he was a collector/dealer of art by black artists. The family had earlier sold what they thought were the valuable pieces and missed that one.

I have showed up 3 hours in advance to put my name on a list, then went out for coffee. And I only did that after learning the hard way at estate sales in the bigger cities. I have never seen a list up here in Alaska, and showing up 30 minutes early to stand in line works fine. Only problem is that most people don't listen to jazz up here.
