At roughly twice the cost, is the Sumiko significantly better than the Denon? How would you describe the differences between the two?

I can't speak for the Denon, but I lived with a Blue Point for quite a while. It was my first moving coil, and I thought that's pretty much what they all sounded like. Never thought it was very good. I replaced it with an old $100 Linn K9 MM, and it was a huge improvement, to my ears, anyway. I'm afraid I'd have to side with the Sumiko detractors.

having owned the original blue point, which is, in fact, a pmount cart on an adaptor. WONDERFUL mids and imaging, not so much the high and low end performance. it never really seems to have control of the top, and the lows are not as tight and extended as they should be.
i had direct conflict with jon carr here on AA where he disputed my assessment. on neither the rabco st4 or SL8E, nor the MMT arms did the cartridge properly perform. the "2" which my friend and i called the BOXCAR, had the same characteristics, if less obvious.
i haven't had experience with said Denon Denon DL-110 but it IS lower output than the BP but may only require more rotation of the volume knob rather than a SUT.
getting a halfway decent SUT would solve future cartridge selection as would getting a SCHIIT MANI phono preamp (XLNT and affordable).

I have owned both. I got the Blue Point in a package deal with a turntable. The Blue was the most god awful cartridge I have ever owned. I could not see how Sumiko would allow themselves to sell it. The DL-110 is the antitheses of the Blue, it is a beautiful sounding cartridge for little money......

Such a deal !

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I've owned two DL-110s (have one now) and have had the displeasure of hearing the Blue Point. Why anyone with functioning ears would buy the Sumiko is beyond me.

God that thing is awful....
The DL-110 is so much better it is laughable to compare them.

I have no direct experience with either cartridge, although I've owned a number of other Denon cartridges and I also owned the original BPS cartridge. The original BPS was pretty bad and I got rid of it after a very long three months of suffering with it. On the other hand, I have enjoyed all my Denon cartridges immensely.
Anyway, my recommendation would be to try the Denon DL-110 because of all the good things I've read about it here in the Asylum as well as because of its very reasonable price. 2juki sells it for $175 with free shipping on eBay. I don't think you can go wrong with Denon.
you can get the denon 103 for around $200. I known it will need a step up and maybe impedence matching but I would think you should consider it/ Or get a damaged version of a high end cart and get it retipped for $150 by souundsmith (basic retip)
its too bad the new 103s aren't available with elliptical or fineline stylus shapes. i avoided the 103s because of the shibata shape which at the time had a high end peak typical of other carts with shibatas of the day. this is when the cd4 system was on the market.
i hesitate to say it was a trend because it was only one segment of the quad trend. there were a couple of other areas where this sonic errata reared its head. the Heil AMT for one and early threshold (non stasis) amps the other. god forbid that those factors all showed up in the same system.
anyway, a 103D was what i preferred and later heard there was the 103m that wasn't conical nor shibata. i waited around too long and then they were all gone and CDs came on the scene. it's all in the timeing sometimes.

I have a line on a good used Grace F9E. Would the Soundsmith basic retip enable "like new" performance again?
Opus 33 1/3
A good used F9E + a basic retip means that I'm already stretching the limits of my budget. The Ruby option does sound nice though.
BTW, I'm already own a DL-110. Hard to beat for the money.
Well, the choice is between the Sumiko Blue Point 2 and the Denon DL-110. Neither of those would be my choice, but I think genungo is looking for a high-output moving coil.
