I think that the only reliable grading has to be an honest visual one. At least if one says that e.g. there is a scuff on side 1 then that should be indisputible. Whether or not it may be audible is uncertain and implying that it can or cannot be heard may mislead.
It seems to me that because replay systems vary so widely where even differing stylus profiles can result in faults being audible on one system but not on another, then using play gradings is potentially a recipe for endless disputes between vendor and buyer. Being specific about audible faults can engender disputes over what may have been passed over otherwise. For example a couple of small ticks may be acceptable. A couple of small ticks where the vendor has stated that there is definitley only one could be cause for complaint.
I understand your reasoning but still prefer that those I consider for purchase be play graded.
