Hey all,
I'm sorry I only post to this form in times of crisis.
Long story short, my stylus had gotten visibly grungy. I got way too excited about cleaning it, applied and brushed stylus cleaner 2-3 times, then almost immediately used a stylus brush to remove the debris. It left a visible trail of liquid on the stylus brush.
My question: Does this potentially do anything bad to the stylus, the stylus brush, or the record I immediately threw on after all this happened?
Or is whatever happened going to fade into distant memory in a matter of hours?
Thanks,
WJ

Makes me think of the dry Linn record cleaner. They made match books with Linn printed on them and you used the abrasive strip to clean the stylus.
With liquid cleaners that have a volatile solvent (evaporates quickly), it is a good idea to wait about a half minute or longer after cleaning before playing the record. The solvent might cause the glue used to hold the stylus in place to soften a bit so it is best to allow the glue to harden before playing. This is the recommendation given by Lyra for their cartridges and their cleaner (they say 10 seconds is enough time, I give it a little extra time to be extra careful).
I would recommend brushing the stylus after each record side to remove any and all dust, debris, and build-up of dirt. If you never let the stylus get dirty, it works a lot better.
I apply Stylast #5 Preservative to the stylus before playing each side of each record and I brush the stylus afterward with the Last stiff bristle brush to remove dirt and debris.
I also recommend using the arm lift. It is a safety net, especially as we get older and less coordinated.
Good luck,

You overdid it and I'd go easy on the juice in the future but you're fine.
That's good to hear. It was one of those weird things that happens with records (like occasionally almost dropping one or almost missing the groove when i drop the needle) where it was like I lost all sense for a while. My main concern was with getting fluid on the record somehow and then playing it but I guess some people believe in "playing wet" so who knows what's good and what's evil.
right?
Records are a lot tougher than they might seem.

I never use the arm lift. That's why I fuck up sometimes.
Yeah, records are your best friend until they're your worst enemy.
Why?

Because his TT doesn't have one? I mean..that's the only reason not to use it... although I know a few guys that ignore it and just pick up the arm and move it over to the record then plop it down.
I don't get it, but it takes all kinds I guess.
I have many times put the stylus down in the wrong place. Things survived quite well.
