My Fosgate phono amp is boxed, ready for repair. A Manley Chinook on demo is finished.
Now realizing a $2-300 emergency cheapie you keep tucked away like a spare tire in the trunk,is necessary.
Time to dust off the CD collection.

Get a working one for almost no money, under $100 if you're patient. Recap it - either look at the schematic on the bottom or order one of several recapping kits people have put together. The job should take 20 minutes, tops. Polish or replace the awful RCAs. Its m/m phono section will probably surprise you, especially if you're coming from something really good. Point of diminishing returns and all that.
It's the universal replacement: phono and line preamp (both good and very quiet), kinda crummy 15-watt power amp, and an FM section with Henry's actually pretty decent RF section. Small, light, no ventilation needed - all good.

I seem to recall hearing good comments about it. It's also possible I hallucinated the whole thing. I'm getting really old.
Wow! nice price and enough LOMC gain. Thanks.
I just may get this one. For the price and features looks like a winner. Even the adjustability specs seem to fall within what I used on my phone stage.
that I use for a phono back up. I knew nothing about it so was not looking but it came to me with a package of components from a friend who was a former dealer. It is a Rotel RQ 970BX and I suspect can be picked up for something close to $100. Be aware that Rotel apparently upgraded a few parts as production progressed so later ones may be better than earlier models.
Also, you can find instructions on line to modify this unit, developed by Andy Grove who was connected with Audio Note. That seems like a pretty fair recommendation.

Thanks for the info. The feedback on that unit is positive like a few other budget boxes I've found with research.
I understand another unit-Vista Phono 1 is another decent low cost piece.
If my repair goes over past the 8 week point, and the price is right(REAL CHEAP) I may get one of the two.
In an attempt to buy a cheap phono stage for my SL-1200, I ended up with four cheap phono stages. One of them sounds expensive and the other three sound cheap, so I use the one that sounds expensive.
First, I bought an Audio Technica AT-PEQ3, which was on sale for $46. That didn't cut it.
Next, I bought a Yaqin MS-22B on eBay for $199. It actually sounds very nice. It sounds at least like $500 if not more so this is the one I use with my SL-1200.
Recently, I thought I should be able to improve on the Yaqin and I bought two $400 phono stages. Neither even comes close to bettering the Yaqin. One is a Bellari VP530 and the other is a Parks Audio Budgie. It was a complete waste of $800.
Personally, I think the particular Yaqin MS-22B I bought sounds like a fairly expensive phono stage. I don't know if I got lucky or whether all Yaqin's sound as good as mine. However, it wouldn't surprise me if I had to spend $1000 to find a better sounding phono stage than my Yaqin MS-22B.
My Budgie clobbered it. No contest. The MS-22B was far less dynamic than the Budgie in my system.
Has to be a component matching issue.

displayed wrong again? Maybe it's the orientation of how I'm taking the pic with this IPad?
Oh well, I did look at some of those EBay specials. Perfect time for one!

No, it sounded dry and lifeless in my system. I didn't notice the output impedance before I bought it so it's my own fault. However, the manual offered an additional recommendation that said it needed to be connected to a line level input with at least 100k-ohms or greater input impedance. The output impedance of the Budgie is 6k-ohms. The Bellari has an output impedance of about 150-ohms and sounds a lot better than the Budgie in my system, but the Yaqin really sounds nice. I can't remember the output impedance of the Yaqin, but I think it's in the neighborhood of a couple of hundred ohms. However, the Yaqin just sounds smooth and very musical. There is just something about its sound quality that impresses me quite a bit.
Best regards,
John Elison

Got a good depth chart, three deep in turntables, second string amp and pre-amp, three deep in speakers, lots of cartridge depth.
Hey, man--I don't tie my shoes without a back up plan.
