As a high school senior in the late '50s, I enjoyed Tjader's mambo records on the Fantasy label, but those are long gone.Picked up a 1987 re-issue of Tjader Plays Mambo and it still does it for me.
A couple of interesting things about this record, aside from the color. Eight of the twelve cuts are in stereo and four are in mono. There were three different sessions. The mono cuts still sound good and full. Four of the stereo cuts feature the Woody Herman trumpet section of the time. I'm guessing around the late '50s. Real crisp sounding. The other curiosity is the slit in the cover where the record goes in and out is at the top rather than the side. Weird.
BTW, colored surfaces sound NM, bought from an amazon re-seller.

Tjader must have had a thing for Red Vinyl.
Actually, I think the Fantasy record label had a thing for it.Got a Brubeck in red. This is an RSD re-issue, but still ...... I do remember seeing some Brubecks in red back in the day.
They did blue vinyl as well. Will post a pic when I get.

I have both colors on Fantasy LPs. The colored vinyl wasn't limited to Cal Tjader. Fantasy also recorded some classical titles. These were on colored vinyl too.
Do you happen to recall any of the classical titles?

Here are the classical titles I'm aware of: *indicates stereo disc, **stereo tape, the rest are mono only; the stereo tape titles were only issued on mono LPs
5001** Hindemith Concertos
5002** Skalkottas Twelve Greek Dances
5003 * Bartok Rhapsodies, Deux Portraits
5005 * Flamenco
5006 * Roland De Lassus Sacred and Secular Works
5007 * Chopin Fur Ballades, Fantasie
5008 Composers Forum
5009 Composers Forum
5010 Composers Forum
5011 * Tomas Luis de Victoria
9001** Dance Gypsy Dance
I have the stereo tapes and the Bartok stereo disc on blue vinyl. The LPs were called Vista Stereo Recordings.
That is amazing information. Thanks.

It is a direct to disk album titled Hurracan, on the Crystal Clear label. Recorded March 22 an d 23 1978 at Wally Heider's in Hollywood. And it runs at 45rpm.
I picked it up in a bargain bin is a used record store somewhere...probably Albuquerque.
I'm not a huge fan, so I could probably be talked out of it...
I have it on CD. May have had it on LP.
It's still available on the web.
Email me with a price and we'll see.
Thanks.

I don't remember where I got it. I might have bought it at Half Price Books or perhaps someone lent it to me. It sounds pretty good, though.
ALRIGHT!
Must. Get.
They were doing something right at Fantasy. Even mono sounds good.

Here is Fantasy's first stereo issue of Cal Tjader's music. There was a second 2-track tape called Más Ritmo Caliente. Analog sound is excellent. It's the same model in a different pose. Four-track tapes and stereo LPs followed.
Wow, I didn't know these existed.
I've got Ritmo Caliente and Mas Ritmo Caliente combined on a CD re-issue.
Allmusic.com has Latin for Dancers as 1966 but that's got to be wrong.
I wonder if Ritmo Caliente is the LP alternate title for the Latin for Dancers tape.
Discogs.com wasn't much help.
So, you can play your Cal Tjader 2-track on your open reel? That's got to be cool.
"If people don't want to come, nothing will stop them" - Sol Hurok
Yeah, I play the tapes on an open reel 2-track deck. It's analog sound at its best. The Latin for Dancers is from around 1958. Same with Más Ritmo Caliente. I found them both in a 1959 Schwann Record Catalog as stereo LPs. It lists Ritmo Caliente as a mono LP.
Both tapes are true stereo. The Latin for Dancers tape has four tracks with the four Herman Herd trumpeters: It Ain't Necessarily So, Fascinatin' Rhythm, I Concentrate On You, and Mambo Macumba. The other tracks are: Yesterdays, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, For Heaven's Sake, This Can't Be Love, Cherry, Autumn Leaves, and I'll Remember April. I don't have the tracks for Más Ritmo Caliente. The insert with the track listings is missing. How does this compare with what you have? The tapes sold for $11.95 in 1958. An inflation calculator shows this is $98 in 2016 dollars!
The CD I have lists these tracks for Mas Ritmo Caliente. Maybe this matches your tape. Recorded in stereo, fall, 1957.
14. Perdido
15. Armando's Hideaway
16. Cuco On Timbales
17. Tumbao
18. Ritmo Rumba
19. Big Noise From Winnetka
20. Poinciana Cha Cha
21. Mongorama
22. Ritmo Africano
23. Perfidia Cha Cha

Yep. These titles seem to match up with the tape, although I only recognize the music for sure on four tracks -- Perdido, Big Noise from Winnetka, Poinciana, and Perfidia. The track order and number of track are the same, and the other tracks seem to fit the titles.
I'm confident that you have solved what has been a mystery to me. Thanks so much. I can now type up an insert to put in the box.
I have a Fantasy 2-track sampler tape that has two more tracks by Cal Tjader. They are The Lady is a Tramp and Dearly Beloved in real stereo. I have no idea what LP album they came from.
After a bit of research, The Lady is a Tramp (I'm pretty sure) is from Cal Tjader Goes Latin which is also compiled on a CD entitled Black Orchid. It's stereo, I listened to a sample of an mp3 on Amazon.
Dearly Beloved is less clear. There seems to be two versions, the mono one on Mambo with Tjader and a stereo one mislabeled by Amazon on an mp3 as Dearly Loved(!). I couldn't find what album it's from. Amazon incorrectly lists it as being on a re-issue of Mambo with Tjader but I'm sure they're mistaken. It's definitely stereo at a slightly slower tempo than the mono.
Hope this helps.

I am jealous, a Tjader record that I don't have. Need to start the search. It looks like new too. Well done. My wife and I got married in the spring of 1969 and within the first month had discovered Cal Tjader. Our first record was Hip Vibrations. I have literally worn out 2 copies and am working on a third. We love this guy. Got to see him live only once, in San Diego somewhere around 1974.
He Bill, could that have been at Funky Quarters? You likely have that live recording if you have most of Tjader's albums.
I didn't attend that one but did catch a few other great concerts there.
"You can't know what the "best" is unless you have heard everything, and keep in mind that given individual tastes, there really isn't any such thing." HP
No that was not the performance that we attended. The Funky Quarters album is quite different from most of his others. As much rock as jazz, almost Santana like. Not my favorite.
I love OJCs, doesn't matter what color they are. I've never got a bad one, they all sound terrific.

Thanks.
I've got that one, too, but on black vinyl.
I don't remember(!) what color it was in 1957.
