My Dad presently uses a late 80s Rega Planar 3 with RB300 tonearm with, from memory, a Goldring MM cartridge of some sort (I think its the 10-- series). He has been offered a fully functional and very tidy, armless Pink Triangle Tarantella from someone who took the RB300 that was fitted to it and used that arm on their newer turntable. Obviously the RB300 from my Dad's Planar 3 would be a drop in replacement and I was wondering what, if any, gains in sound would he get if he switched? I don't know PT decks at all and I know Dad has been pretty happy with the Planar 3, and he's had it for about 15-20 years and kept it nice/serviced in that time, so it would be a shame to spend the money if there isn't much gain in sound quality.
Can anyone offer any opinions/comparisons between the Planar 3 and the Tarantella?
Thanks.
Follow Ups:
I suggest he stick with the Planar 3 unless the Pink Triangle can be equally fuss-less. Does it even have a dust cover, for instance?
I have modified my Planar 3 in the motor compartment. New white belt and I added some damping to the motor assembly. The buzzing motor has been my only gripe about a Planar 3 and I appear to have eliminated 80% of it, without buying the new DC motor.
Thanks, I think Dad'll agree with you. The PT is likely the better deck but seems like it is more sensitive to set up/location, and the PSU and main bearing are potential weak points which could cause issue in the future.
i've had both (and them at the same time)...and the Pink Triangle T will give you blacker backgrounds, more soundstage, 'cleaner' sound (more open, LESS veiled, less 'hazy'), and more detail, than the late 80's Planar.
and yes, the Triangle did have some 'reliability' issues (google it), but if the one in question here is working properly, and the price was right (btw...how much?), i'd do it.
also....a reviewer comparing the two:
Many thanks for the reply, and for the linked review. Looks the PT would be improvement though the asking price (~$400 I think) may be better saved and put towards a different turntable if more money was added, in order to gain a more noticeable improvement. I have been doing a bit more reading about the Tarantella and it seems that the long term reliability is the key issue - I don't think my Dad will want to gamble on something which may not outlast him, which is how he sees his Planar 3 :).
