17 million vinyl LPs were sold in 2015 generating revenue of $416 million. That is compared to billions of of on-demand free downloads that generated $385 million.

for those who are interested.
Ad generated revenue is included for "free downloads".
How can "free downloads" generate income? all downloads, yes; free one's, i don't know.
As I conjectured in another post, ad revenue?
-Wendell
Ads yep they are the revenue I mean who wants adds popping up or banners across the page but it has become the price of admission for most "free" sites. As I see it nothing in this world is free you just might not notice them reaching in your pocket is all.
Excuse me while I listen to "Chicken Heads". Great song
Just from everyday experience I have noticed talking to people that they esp the younger crowd are getting into LPs. Going to the record shows age is much younger, they have a new record shop down the street from me and several across town that have been holding strong for years now. I just watch the prices more interest can turn into higher prices that I have noticed. But if you have the right connections know the vendors and the guys at the record stores they won't try and hit you up with the higher prices. Yes one of the benefits of Lps always was the sound first but the price has always been a draw for me. I know nothing about the new recordings and there prices sure I could not afford them in the long streach of time I plan on buying.
According to this guy, record sales were driven by hipsters, who like LPs because they are " filled with hisses and pops that digital music had erased. But those flaws added a depth and warmth to the music ... Fueled by that unique sound quality and a nostalgia wave , sales of vinyl records were up ..."

I'd rather my favorite pursuit be less popular. The net result being, more for less.
Every other thing in our economy is the more made the cheaper they get.

true, but there are multiple variables. supply vs demand and the economies created by higher volumes are but two.
Excess inventory would also lower prices Id bet.

10 years from now we will all be thrifting like mad again.
That's an average record price of 416 / 17 = $24.47.
Sounds about right and not far off the average of what I pay for new vinyl.

Ad revenue?
-Wendell
"Revenues from vinyl sales last year were higher than those of on-demand ad supported streaming services, such as YouTube, Vevo and Spotify's free service, which only accounted for $385 million, according to the RIAA. (To be clear, though, paid subscription services and Internet radio services, like Pandora, greatly exceeded LP and EP sales.)"

While I am very happy to see increased revenue from vinyl I have no idea how they could possibly get a good number for on demand revenue. Every cable or SAT subscriber can use their account info to access channels they pay for from most any digital device. How do they determine what percentage of a given bill is for on demand I wonder. I guess they have some formula. I guess it also includes when people pay for a movie or sporting event too. The on demand numbers sound a little small for our video addicted nation.ET

Think about it. Every device you use to access the content is. 2 way device. They know exactly what you're watching/ listening too, and what you're doing it on.

Sure but my point was how do they determine the $$ for on demand? I can use a tablet with my DirecTV acvount and watch any channels that my account has access to. How do they parse that accurately?

Can't vouch for the numbers.

I hear you and wasnt holding you responsible. When I read it I was happy but had no idea how they could come up with an on demand number.
