I dragged out an old Thorens TD124 mkI Table that I had purchased 5 years
ago at a yard sale, And I want to get it spinning some vinyl.
The Table is in very good condition, but the Arm, an ESL 1000 has
a completely shot, broken Head shell, so I am looking for a replacement,
& the cart mounted to It is an old Empire 880p and the stylus looks like
it could use a replacement.
So I may try to find a replacement stylus, or try something else like
maybe a shure, but Not sure which one to get.
I even thought about making a larger arm board and mounting a JMW 12.5 arm
that I have stashed away, But The vintage ESL arm visually looks very nice on this table, The JMW 12.5 may look out of place.
All You ESL owners, what cartridges have you had the most success with?
Follow Ups:
Try a head shell that can be rotated for azimuth ex: Sumiko HS12 - might work with your ESL arm.
Joseph, you're the man.
I had a friend years ago who had a similar problem with an ESL and IIRC, that's what he did. If I may add, I think he had to file off the locating pin...but not sure anymore if the headshell stayed in place without it or he found a way to relocate it.
The ESL has an unusual contact pin pattern which you will notice when you look in the barrel of the arm. It's a star pattern and not a square. I'm not aware of any current production headshell or vintage headshell that uses that pattern other than ESL. I've used some Stanton 500 cartidges in that arm which would also give you stylus interchangeablility for 78 capability. Start watching ebay for used ESL headshells. They are pricey because the bakelite they are made of gets brittle and cracks and not many have survived. When you find one you're interested in check the pictures to see that all wiring is intact as well as the molded in metal mounting nuts. The ESL 1000 headshell is bakelite and the ESL 2000 is cast metal which is usually pitted badly by now. I'm not sure if the vintage Ortofon headshells would work but they are even more pricey. I wonder if there is any way to retrofit a current production metal mounting piece in the hole left on your headshell and superglue or epoxy it in. Alignment would be critical. Good luck.

Wiring looks damn old probably should be rewired.
