Check out a download by Dr. Feikert called PlatterSpeed from App Store (free). You play a 3150 Hz tone (on many test records) and your Ipod Touch, Iphone will tell you the exact speed your turntable is turning. I think it's correct...I had to adjust my turntable (a bit too fast) using a strobe. Enjoy

How do you know that the test record with the test tone was cut at exactly 33.33333 or that the spindle hole is perfectly centered? Great idea, but a flawed execution.
I have confidence that the carefully produced test record would be careful of such things. I suspect the strobe test has printing and line frequency variables. The app approach is a digital readout that also tells you the variations that accrue. I used the stobe method and the result was fast relative to the app method.... Each to his/her own.
Sounds like a lot to endure. I have always had good luck with the strobe disc I printed off from vinyl engine and a home depot 7.99 fluorescent light.
One thing a strobe doesn't account for is stylus drag and if the the test records not cut at 33.3 what makes you think any other record is cut at exactly that speed
its actually very easy to download and use.
