This isn't a rant whatsoever but I am bummed I even saw this. I happen to work for Goodwill, I'm a service tech so I'm in a bunch of stores in my area. Yesterday, I was doing some paperwork/computer work in the training room when I noticed 4 large bins full of records. My curiosity got the better of me so I started looking through, which I'm really not supposed to do since I'm not a store employee. My jaw dropped when I saw all the Led Zep, Who, Stones, Zappa, Airplane, so on and so forth. I checked out a few of the records and they were in great shape in original sleeves. Thing is these looked like originals due to the gatefolds and what not. Then I saw an original Some Girls, actresses and all, checked out the vinyl, no scratches and looked clean as the day it was bought. The cover had a little damage below the bottom cutout, some paper had gotten stuck to it.
But I brought up what I found to the manager and said she could get more than 99 cents for a lot of these records. I went back to the store today, I did actually have more work to do there and all the records were still sitting in back. I was tempted to tell her to just roll out a cart with a bin of records each day, there are probably 800 or more total. I want them myself to listen to, but I don't want to get fired or anyone else fired. Policy is what goes on the floor has to be on the floor for half an hour before an employee can purchase, and I have gotten some bargains but not vinyl. I'm out of luck regardless because I can't just loiter in a store lol, I like my job. But, I know when these records do make it to the floor someone who is a re-seller is probably going to be the person to get them, uggghhh.

When they get put on the floor, then you can dash over?
I do get a discount at Goodwill, have picked up a few things for myself and my kids. But, merchandise has to be on the sales floor for 1/2 an hour before I can buy, and I can't and won't ask them to put it on the floor just so I can get the stuff. I have other stores to work at throughout the day so can't just hang out there. It's one of those things where I wish I didn't even see the records. I value my job and all the Store managers and assistants value theirs, and it's a good company.
If I had a friend that lived close to that store I'd figure something out but it's my farthest away store so no one near there. I'll be there again next week lol.
Goodwill and other thrift outlets do sell online. This may be where those Classic Rock albums are headed:
The plan is to get the Goodwill the most bang for the buck for their charity efforts not to make a batch of middle aged middle class males happy. We have had this particular discussion many times. The mission of the Goodwill helping the poor not the well off but, stingy audiophile.
I don't know anyone who has worked at Goodwill but based on this thread I don't see where the Op gets a discount, and I'm pretty sure they don't "auction" the items. So it seems to me that Goodwill will get the same amount of money regardless who gets them.
Please educate me on Goodwill policy if I am wrong. I donate all the time but don't shop there.
It works out that Goodwill get more money overall when the resellers are forced to buy 100's or thousands of records to get the ones they want to resell. I met a reseller and he buys from the Goodwill in lots of thousands and then sorts them. It is not what you and I are willing to do as the expense alone would be ugly.
get a friend to help you out muchacho
Amen. The people who work at these goodwills usually get all the best stuff, no reason for the OP to miss out. I used to resent that, but I eventually realized that otherwise the pros swoop in and get it all anyway, so they might as well go to the guys working at the store. An ordinary collector like myself just doesn't have the time to check all these places often enough to find these major scores.
Yes, I hope the Op gets them. At least he wants to listen to them and appreciate them, as opposed to a dealer that just wants to flip them for $$.
