My wife ran across a 78 set of Hawaiian chants in her late father's collection. It is selling on e-bay right now for $1000 (not ours, a different one). Ours has one record missing out of four total. Obviously that devalues it, probably significantly. I.e. I would doubt it's worth $750.
So how do we figure out what it is worth? I guess we could just put it on e-bay and see what happens, of course, but I know some of you collect and was hoping maybe one of you could give me an idea of what to start bidding at, etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I knew this forum would be helpful (although I just bought a plinth for my TD 150 so I currently have no interest in an idler).
I knew that what sells on ebay is often very different from what people ask for, so I should have thought to take a look at that. My wife got very excited, and seeing $$$ can be catching!
If we can't find the fourth 78 in his other records we'll probably hang onto this and try for a fourth, then donate the whole set to a local school. Connecticut College started as a music school so we think they might like this.
I know the feeling with a missing record from a valuable set. I have a nice copy of ASD 602 (Bruckner 8 recorded by Carl Schuricht) but I do not have ASD 603 (Third and fourth movements). Together, ASD 602 and 603 are worth about $2000-3000. I'd be lucky to get 1/10 of that for just ASD 602 (not that I am in it for the $$$)
Parenthetically, I absolutely love the recording and have it on a couple of re-issue labels including a US angel and (better) a WRC pressing.

As John already mentioned, there is the same set available on eBay now for $19.50(see link below). However, your short set is the original, and the $19.50 set is a reissue. Your set and the reissue are still from the 40s or earlier.
If you check popsike.com and eBay completed listings, you will see that the artist has not sold any singles for more than $30 and one album of 4 hula records for $45.
The artist Al Kealoha Perry does not command high prices in Hawaii or from Hawaiian music collectors, and I do collect Hawaiian 78s after being born and raised there.
To me, a 78rpm record album missing a record or having one reissue replacement record is almost valueless. When I find a 78rpm album in a garage sale or thrift store with a record missing, I immediately start a eBay search for the missing record. I am never satisfied until I complete the set. I would never intentionally buy a 78 album set on eBay with a record missing.
As far as the $1000 Hawaiian chant album set on eBay, please note that the seller's feedback shows NO experience selling records, much less fragile 78s. If not packed perfectly, the records could arrive like a Hawaiian set I once received(see pic). The seller describes the set condition as G+, and that is real bad for 78s. And the funniest part of all is that the seller does NOT SHIP TO HAWAII! The album jacket has damage and is repaired in areas with scotch tape. Several of the records have spindle hole wear as well. The $1000 is not just a joke to me, it is pitiful as well.
Remember there is a big difference between someone asking a large amount and being able to get it. A quick look on ebay indicated nothing in this category getting more than about $20. Therefore I would guess you would be unlikely to get more than $10, assuming good condition and some reason it might be desirable to a collector.
My sense is that many people price 78s on Ebay very high based solely on the fact that the record is old.
On the other hand, I have no real idea what the market for Hawaiian chants is.
The owner, Gary is a fine gentleman. If he does not have your idler in stock as a trade-in deal, he will have your unit rebuilt with a guarantee of satisfaction.
Also, if you have other idlers that are not needed, consider mentioning this to him, as he often offers additional trade-in value deals on our surplus items !

Things to consider to help you get an idea of value:-Whether this set is an original pressing or a reissue. Reissues are worth a lot less than original pressings.
-What condition the records are in. E, VG, etc.
-Whether there are eBay listings for the remaining individual records in the set. If there are, that would help you set prices for your records.
It may even be worth BUYING a replacement record to complete the set, if you can, so you can sell the complete package. Do plenty of research.
This is just general info, mind. I know squat about Hawaiian chants as a genre.
